Playing the usual North American moderne 2/1 stuff, 2♠ is a normal raise, 3♣ is limit raise or better with cards, 3♠ is a weak to moderate raise with shape and four or more spades, 4♣ or 4♦ are splinters, 4♠ is weak with five trumps and some shape. Partner will assume your weak bids contain a few high cards.
P_Marlowe
Hi, 3S. It is not clear if they can make anything, and it is not clear that we can make anything. If partner raises to 4s, he should have a fairchance to make it.You can sell me 4S, but you are playing MP. It would be tougher, if partner would have opened 1H. Partner will expect a weak hand with 4 trumps, shape and some high cards?I wonder how such a hand looks like. I think 3S is normal, you have 5 trumps, and a single. With kind regardsMarlowe
whereagles
Seems like an obvious 4♠ bid to me
pbleighton
I have to pass in this partnership, since "Partner will assume your weak bids contain a few high cards." However, this is not an agreement I would agree to. This is a clear 4S raise to me. Peter
Mr. Dodgy
Not truly a Yarborough. 4♠.

pclayton
3S at this vul, color me yellow. Youre at green bubba. Frances had a poll on a very similar hand a few months ago. Do we tap dance with something or blast? MSC has a problem like too, except the hand had 6 or 7 spades; which made higher preemption more tempting, but I think 4♠ was still chosen. jdeegan
 The panel has this hand right. 4♠ might have ended the auction. But, this isn't your day, the bidding continues:[hv=d=w&v=e&s=s109762h98652d32c10]133|100|Scoring: MPP-1♠-2♣-4♠5♣-DBL-P-???[/hv]How many tricks in this hand? How are they split? If I do pass, what do I lead?

With kind regardsMarlowe PS: Lead a spade, most likely it wont destroy anything,a trump lead is a distant option, but you know, thatwe have most likely not the bal. of power. whereagles
Diamond lead could actually be a killer... but at table we'd all lead a spade 95% of the time.
pclayton
Side question - Ive been using a direct 3N as a preemptive raise with a trick over 1 major. I also use it over x's. Any sense in using it over overcalls? Doesnt seem to since 3N should be natural, and it shuts out LHO from making a lead director.
