Monospaced hand display

Recommended Posts

This is a small, low priority point. It certainly is not a bug and should not delay the next release. It is also a point that is unlikely to receive unanimous approval, if indeed it bothers anyone apart from me. Therefore, if implemented, I think it should probably be at user preference settings level rather than global.

I usually view cards in the displayed layout that does NOT make the cards look like fancy overlappying playing cards. In other words I view them in diagram mode. I don't know whether it has a name as such.

I would prefer it if they were displayed in a mono-spaced rather than proportional font, so that (eg) the third card in each suit is stacked vertically one atop the other in a lined-up column. This may require a "10" to be displayed as "T" or by widening the spaces between other cards so as to accommodate the width of a 10.

Currently, if you have a distributional hand, say

AKQJT

765432

A4

Then the Hearts are strung out so that the suit APPEARS longer than the Diamonds.

Of course, there is no excuse for miscounting the suit for that reason, but by the same token there is no excuse for a revoke and yet the software assists to prevent such an act. It would I think be a service to the members not to display the cards so as to encourage miscounting them (at least when drunk).

Sorry - I have tried this before and it looks terrible.

Perhaps it could be left to the user to decide, within his preferences? If it has already been tried, presumably you still have the code, so that part at least would not need to be re-written.

Just a thought.

It would be easy to make this an option, but I am hesitant to add new options at this time, especially new options that I believe will not be used by very many people.

During the most recent series of releases I spent a lot of time reworking and cleaning up how options are displayed and selected. The result of this is (in my opinion at least) that it is now a lot easier for people to find the options that they are looking for. Adding new options that most people will never use will start the process of recluttering up the options dialog box which will in turn make it harder for people to find the options that they are most likely to be seeking.

Besides that, Uday has convinced me that having a ton of options is a sign of poor initial design so nowadays I am trying harder to get things right the first time so that it is not necessary to include options that act as little more than bandaids.

Besides that (as usual) there are a lot of other things I am working on that I believe are more important than minor tweaks to the user interface.

Besides that, when hand diagrams are used in bridge literature, they do not use a format like the one you suggest. I had always assumed that the people who prefer hand diagram notation are largely those that are familiar with that notation since they are people who have studied the game. I further assume that most of these people would prefer their hand diagrams to look like those in the books, magazines, and newspaper columns that they read.

Besides that, what you suggest really does look ugly - I suspect that at least some of the people who think they would use this option would change their minds when they saw how it looked.

If a lot of people start asking me to do this, I might reconsider, but I really don't think this is a good idea (no offense intended).
