Hi,

Here is a hand we played at the club today - our opps sitting N/S bid and made 6

During the auction North paused for a very long time (North acknowledged the pause) before bidding 4.

I considered calling the TD - but didn't.

South then bid 4 so I thought all was ok, then North carries on with 5 and the auction ends in 6.

By this time I feel too silly to call the td :o

Anyway, if you were TD and had been called how would you have responded?

(1) 2 (3) P

(3): (4)*

(4): (5)

Result stands, although i would ask the meaning of 3 (game force? promise spade fit?)

The "break in tempo" was by the 4 who then bid on after that, so south took absolutely no advantage of the BIT. On this auction, if north was interested in keycards he could bid 4NT, with one unbid suit (clubs), 5 seems clear enough to me.. .bid slam with control of clubs. Nuff said. And regardless of the meaning of 5, it is the 5 bid not the 4 bid that gets NS to slam.

Seems that North's problem was whether he could "agree hearts" and also force. I'm sure he was worried that a 4 bid would be passed. So I imagine his intention all along was to drive to slam (or at least make another try). Of course all of this is wild speculation on my part and if I felt there was any reason to look for a UI case, I would have to ask more questions. However, as Ben said, it was South that had the UI, not North. So I don't imagine there will be an adjustment regardless.

North produced an UI by the BIT, but thats not illegal.

The question is how and if at all this UI influenced south bidding.

3 seems to be strong and forcing probably GF.

It might be interesting to know if it is agreeing , because 3 might be a Cuebid than.

4 is a new suit of an unlimited partner and it is forcing

South is forced to bid (so pass is no LA), what could south bid?

South showed 4 and 5, both seem unsupported by partner so 4 seems the only bid.

5 is a clear slam invitation

So it seems that the UI was irrelevant, result stands.

"Don't bother me right now, I'm busy directing the eggnog"

Happily for the table result the other posters are quite correct, and there was no damage caused by the pause.
