do you double or bid 2h with this hand?

Recommended Posts

Close between double and 2 for me, but I have a really good 3 card suit, while my 5 carder is rather poor, and I also have 4...hmm..come to think of it, this is less close for me.

I double. .. neilkaz ..

West North East South

- - - 2

2 Pass Pass 3

Pass Pass 3 Pass

Pass Pass

this was the board. We missed game. I was upset because my pard pass after my 2h however seems that my bid was wrong, I thought biding over a weak2 will not show a weak hand. I still do not understand the reason of my pard pass even my bid was wrong.

There seems to be some confusion about this among B/I players. I'll try to make it clear:

An overcall at the two-level or above shows a good hand (if not a jump). Usually this is at least opening values. If partner has a hand that can envision game opposite an opener, then he should definitely bid! Partner's continuations (especially continuations other than a single raise) are constructive and show reasonable hands as well.

An overcall at the one-level can be a good hand. While some fairly light hands with good suits qualify, there's nothing stopping you from overcalling with 15-16 high card points. In general partner should bid if he can envision game opposite such a maximum.

On the hand in question, west has overcalled at the two-level. This usually shows opening values (sure we all overcall a bit light with six good hearts, but the point is that the overcall is not a weak bid by any means). East has a clear game force opposite such a call.

I personally like the 2 call for two reasons. One is that I've found that doubling a minor with a two-card discrepancy in the majors is often a recipe for reaching the wrong major fit or failing to compete the hand to the right level. Another is that if LHO raises to 3 I can potentially balance with a double after overcalling 2, which describes my shape perfectly (although perhaps a bit light on values with this particular hand), whereas if I start with double and LHO raises my only balancing call will be to double again (angling for that 4-3 spade fit again) since bidding 3 would show a better hand and suit.

You were not wrong, your pd was. As others said, it's close between dbl and 2H, and I might choose 2H too. With 13 count and 4-card support, to pass your 2H is a crime. Yes, DK might be completely waste and 4-3-3-3 is not great, but still he owed you a 3H raise (if not 3D for stronger raise).

Seriously.. I overcall aggressively vs weak 2's and it has resulted in a PD or 2 leaving me, but with responder's hand, if you make the K of a low spot, I'd still put tha hand into game opposite anything I could bid 2 with here.

BTW, opener with 8 deserves a WIMP award for only opening 2...in 3rd seat I'd open 4 or even 5 at this fav vul.
