HeartA
There are two choices, 4NT or double. I prefer 4NT over X.
Winstonm
Double. If partner leaves it in, fine. I like to reserve 4N here for undisclosed 2-suiters
Guest Jlall
double. If we have a slam this may work poorly, otherwise I will expect to beat them more than our game. I'm not hopeful about partner pulling when I have this hand, but if he were to pull I would raise him to 7.
temp3600
At equal vulnerability, I will keep 4♠X in the picture. If partner passes the X, I think we have a good chance of scoring 500.If we were red vs green, I would force our side to the 5 level. the hog
X. From where do these hands come and why do I never hold them when playing for the coin of the realm?
pclayton
Dbl. 4N is two places to play - I have 3.
whereagles
4N is two places to play - I have 3. Even better! :P
inquiry
4N is two places to play - I have 3. Even better! Double... three places to play is NOT better than two.. If parnter held three clubs and five in a red suit, short in other red, he will bid 5♣ opposite 4NT but his five card suit opposite a double. EricK
This looks like a double to me. 4NT would be two places to play, but what are 5♠ and 5NT?
neilkaz
Dbl. 4N is two places to play - I have 3. If 4♠ was opened, do you play that dble is very penalty oriented and 4NT is take out ? That is what I've always played, but I see the expert trend shifting towards doubling with hands like this and using 4NT when you have 2 places to play or simply cannot stand the double to be passed. This is a tough hand, but if the double is passed, we can hope we have plenty of defensive tricks.

The beginner luck doesn't help a BIL player.
mikeh
when I saw the hand, before seeing the actual layout, it seemed to me that the only two choices that made sense were double and 5♠. It is not clear to me what partner would/should do over double, especially since partner will not think my shape is this extreme. If partner were to pull to 5♦, now I have an easy 5♠ as a grand slam try... and over 6♣ by partner......? I think I'm in trouble now.... since I doubt that I could stop. If I got it off my chest via 5♠, would/should partner bid grand? I don't think so, but I wish I didn't know the layout.
