Dbl is probably better. Unless LHO blasts to the stratosphere, you'll get to the right contract:

1 (2) dbl (pass)

2 (pass) 2 (now non forcing)

1 (2) dbl (pass)

2 (pass) 3/4 (depending on the mood)

1 (2) dbl (3)

3 (pass) 3

etc..

2.

Rebidding spades after double and a minimum rebid from partner shows a weaker hand than I have. E.g. after LHO raises to 3 and partner passes, I really have a problem I think: rebidding 3 shows mostly spades, and another double may let partner pick the weak 4-3 instead of the strong 5-3 (or 5-2) fit.

I bid 2.

Normally I would agree with Peter:

Generally, when you have two bids, one which is unilateral, and one which involves pd, involve pd.

but on this hand I think I would regret more missing a 5-3 spade fit than missing a 4-4 heart fit.

I am not completely sure I like the 4 bid. I would prefer that the 4 bidder doubled 4 for takeout but that might not be everyone's agreement. Its a good agreement to have that double is takeout whenever the opponent's bid and raise a suit and we have not found a fit and not yet fully described our hands.

The hand in question has a very strong 5 card suit and a weak 4 card suit. I think it is just good enough to force to game since the K is likely to be onside. I am a bit concerned about a weak doubleton in PD's suit, but will take the chance to press to game.

So 2 for me, and then when I rebid I have shown my 5-4 hand and desire to play game.

I fear that a neg double may cloud the issue if they jack up the auction and my can play opposite a doubleton if need be.
