Pard Doubles

Recommended Posts

My two cents:

I'm not sure anything here either is or should be forcing but it seems to me that 2NT would show a more or less balanced hand with a scattering of values, and it would be my call. I suppose a cue is forcing (no kidding) but I am not sure what it would show other than being forcing. Some sort of values w/o a diamond stop probably, but maybe a maximum bid with a heart fit. I would expect the former. Here, Qxx is not much of a stop but with all missing values either across the table or on your left it will probably do so 2N seems right.

I have no idea if this is at all standard, but it's what I would do. I see this as "make the call that seems right" rather than as a conventional agreement situation.

I play that partner's bid shows in the 17 - 20 point range, ELC doesn't apply.

I have a max 1 call, but I agree with it since my holding is rather tenuous opposite short 's. Once pard turns up with a big one suited hand, my Q doesn't rate to be so bad, since pard doesn't automatically have short 's.

What's forcing here? 2 (I'd say no), 2N (probably no), 3 (definitely no), which leaves 3, so thats what I'll bid.

A limited hand (0-8 or similar) can never force. However, it is only common sense that pd can't pass our cuebid. 2 should NOT be ELC-- that would be 2! And as pd has 17-20 pts as Phil pointed out (and that's std treatment), we want to be in game. Our diamond stop is far from delighting, so 3 is by far the best bid.

Your bid.

What agreements do you have in this sort of auction?

What sort of hand should bid 2, and which bids are forcing?

I might have responded 2 to begin with. With 4 I and 8 hcp, I would have responded 1 but with 8 hcp and 5 card spade suit I usually jump one level. The major problem is the diamond Queen might not be pulling its full weight. Still, I would have bid 2.

Over 1, 2 is NOT forcing, but I could have xxx xx xxxxx xxx, and partner is showing a good hand. If partner wanted to force, he could have jumped to 3 or cue-bid 2. I will bid 3 because if partner has Kx of diamonds, NT will play better from his side. I might end up in 4 if he bids 3 or 3 now.

As for what is forcing by me over 2, nothing at the two level. So 3 is probably the best forcing bid availalbe (and will find out what I need to know anyway about stopper).

I don't think anything other than 3, 3 and 4(?) is forcing. But maybe it depends on your style of t/o doubles. I prefer to double with flexible hands only. If partner's bidding does not suggest any flexibility but merely a strong hand with hearts, a case could be made for 2NT and/or 3 being forcing.

If 2NT is forcing I bid that to save some space, but without that agreement I bid 3. 3 makes it difficult to reach 3NT but we probably belong in 4 or maybe 4.
