The decision is between double and pass, not sacrifice or pass. Against opponents who might be on a 4-3 fit in this auction ("always bid 2x against a strong club"), I would double. Ok I may be exaggerating, but down 3 would certainly be possible against some. Against sane opponents, I would probably pass.

Can we beat them? Competent opponrnts may have bid a reasonable game.

Yea, you're absolutely right. At the moment 4NT seemed to me like a good bid. Next time I'll think again before trying to "sac" opposite my strong strong p (and posting obvious situations as polls). I heard them bidding to make. But that's no reason to assume they WILL.

Agree with Peter. If you want to bid, do it while you're still at a reasonable safe level.

 

Btw, as it happens there were 19 total tricks. So bidding would have been right if either contract makes and the other was two down. But it could have been worse.
