Why would a top proffesional cheat

Recommended Posts

Why would a top professional player even risk such a thing? It has happened, and it will happen again.

a few reasons spring to mind, the first is because they can

another is why do so many athletes cheat, because others do and as soon as it is rife everyone will do it to get a competative edge

imagine someone young and on the way up, cheats a few times to get results early on in his or her career, when he is at the top, he is still a cheat, he may be a cheat on a sabatical or just waiting for an opportunity to do it again

if I had worked real hard to get to the top and I had to play against someone, that was good, but not top class, in fact not quite good enough to be top flight, that needed to pay someone hundreds of thousands of dollars to play with them or more to the point, to carry them at this level because they are not good enough to make it with out the cash,

Why does it suprise people that even at the top level there are cheats

winning by cheating or wimnning by using your financial wealth, which is most deplorable... I know some nice cheats, I dont know anyone nice that uses money to get what they want

anyway I would hate to be a body that has to manage this situation, but at least they try, cheats are about and always will be about, it is a fact of life

My appologies for those who may not agree with me here, but if you start a controversial thread, you can expect some enthusiastic answers.

Over the past 30 years I have been cheated several times at backgammon for serious stakes.

Trust me that, while on the surface many of these people are quite charming, they all share one thing in common. They are the scum of the earth, and about all that matters to them is money, often made by stealing others'.

Cheaters in backgammon aren't nice people and it also isn't any different in bridge.

hi Neil

I know this is a controversial subject, but that does not mean I am going to shy away from it.

Whilst I agree in principle with you, I find peoples attitude towards cheating very hard to accept, I use life as an experience as that is all I have to go by and as much as I have seen a lot of people with high moral standards.

99% of people or possibly 100% will lie or cheat at some time in thier lives, cheating at bridge or cheating to win the big pot and win some respect, or what ever the motivation, cheating is a fact of life and it amuses me to see just how worked up some people become about cheating.

This is not aimed at you neil, but may be some posters in these forums, have one high and mighty horse they ride, they deem to take any oportunity to deride the ACBL for trying to do something, I have meet similar people all my life, all they are fit for is challenging others attempt to do the right thing, I believe that they should get off thier backside and do something them selves, but that is too much to expect, armchair critics are worse people than the cheaters, at least with the cheaters there are consequences for getting caught, there appears no consequence for people that seem to spend their life deriding others and not doing anything constructive them selves

How many posters here, can put their hand n their heart and say the have never lied or cheated to get something they wanted, how many politicians have been caught with their hand in the cookie jar amd how many have not. And I bet if any of you met a celebrity that has been caught lying and cheating, you would suck up to them and say, really nice guy and forget about the seedy side of that person.

Would you disown your own children if they lied and cheated, the simple answer is NO

Why should anyone critise the ACBL for trying to do something about a problem, I am sorely tempted to aim this post at a star player, but I fear that I would be banned, which is a dam shame as I think I would rather have a conversation with a cheat and a liar than a sanctimonious screwball.

Cheating is not fair, everyone understands that and it is not nice when you lose becausde someone has flaunted the rules, but it happens and it is hard to eliminate, but why , why , why does everyone think the ACBL handling of cheats is bad, if it is that easy to solve, then post the solution here, please bear in mind cost and practicality of your solution

I have tried to look up what kind of doping tests the bridge community has committed itself to apply to. Not very much it looks like.

WBF(World Bridge Federation) has accepted WADA code for Olympic's.

This link from WADA into WBF is dead. Bridge (WBF) World Bridge Federation

Search for such kind of topics seems not possible on WBF site.

Search for Doping on ACBL returned 0 results. Same for EBF.

Danish Bridge Federation seems not to be a member of any organization which is committed to conduct doping tests.

All this looks suspicious to me. Doping is the most obvious way for for top-professionals for cheating. Looks like being a safe way too B)

Not true. With a minimum of effort you would have found the following links:

http://tinyurl.com/yldlmq (made into a tinyurl by me)

and

http://www.wada-ama.org/en/

Since the Danish Bridge Federation is a member of the WBF, all anti-doping regulations apply for that federation too.

If you accept bad behavior, whether its cheating (or graft by politicians) it becomes accepted as normal and more common.

If its "known" that cheating is common then it ruins the fun for those who don't cheat and don't win as they may think they were cheated.

This came up at the table:

Pard opens 1NT (15-17), RHO passes, I pass (maybe I had 7 HCP)

and LHO asks "Pard are we useing CAPP or DONT"

This is a pick up game and I have no problem with opps agreeing on a defense.

RHO says "How about Pass" and LHO passed.

It was just a meaningless pick up game, but I was annoyed at that brazen behaviour. I privately told the opps that was unethical behaviour, they got mad at me, and I asked them to leave my table (privately). (Of course I blacklisted them)
