Which vacuum cleaner is best?

Dysons are very good - but are they worth the extra money? Probably not.

One thing I have never been able to understand (as a single man) - the instructions say you should change the filters every three months - I can't recommend any vacuum clearner where you have to change the filters every time you use it! :)

I'm quite satisfied with my Phillips. They are cheap and nothing wrong with. The low power also has it advantages - less noise, less energy consumption, less risk of sucking up valuable things that lay on the floor (happen often in my house) and no harm to the cats if I hit them by accident.

If you have different kind of floors in your house it may be a good idea with one with variable power (high power for carpets and low power for wood). Of course nowadays most have variable power except for the cheapest ones.

Other than that I wouldn't invest in anything fancy.

I like my Dyson.

I like being able to see how full it is, so I know when it needs emptying, and I like not having to remember to buy bags for it.

My husband does most of the the actual vacuuming, so I can't comment on how good it is at that part.

Get yourself a Hoover - they don't do anything but that is exactly what we want them to do.

The other problem is that when you use a vacuum as a means of lifting dust, dirt, lint, and the such, which then fills the vacuum, you aren't really cleaning the vacuum but dirtying it - so shouldn't these be called vacuum dirtiers?

I'm in the process of trying to adapt some straps to my present vacuum-cleaner, so as not having to drag him around. I'll let you know the outcome, eventually :P

Disclaimer: I have DOZENS of neat little ideas like this. If you're interested to know more and hire me as artifact designer, please contact me by private message :) I'm not kidding!

Well there is a big difference between US and EU vacuum cleaners. The US ones are so powerful and bulky whereas the EU ones are less powerful and easier to handle. I guess it's part of the culture.

My current one is a small Bosch, and I am very happy with it ;) I wouldn't possibly know which one is best, I have tried only this one and my previous one. It also depends on what you use it for.

The best cleaner you can buy is an Oreck. They are big, heavy, expensive and can suck a tennis ball through a garden hose. An Oreck will also outlast you.

My mother in law used to have a smaller version. When I worked in a retail store 20 years ago we had a commercial model. The thing was as heavy as a volkswagon, but it wasn't that hard to push.

I would recomment a "Miele". We have one for more then 15 years still working without any problems and marvellous results. We bought others- cheaper in this period for the office in this time, they did not live so long.
