do you open this....

For me it would depend on whether all those xxxx were 234's or 8910's.

We agree..since things can be quite uncomfortable if the response is 2..

I'd want a couple 10's and 9's here to round things out and minimize the chance of a double disaster if we run into a 4-1 split in game.

I would open Katherine, but you have to choose your opening bid carefully to avoid rebid problems. Playing a 4 card M system open 1H and rebid 2D. Playing a 5 card M system either pass or open 1D and rebid 2D - not ideal, but there it is....

NO! DON'T open this 1NT!

From memory, these are your 9s and 10s:

Dealer: ?????
Vul: ????
Scoring: Unknown
10xxx
AJ9x
AQxx
x

And yes, the reply was 2 :)

Sean

Close, but for me if it is close I tend to pass - an opening hand would look like this in my book:

1097x

AJ10x

AQ98

x

Then, if I did get trapped by the 2C bid, I'd rebid 2N as least of evils.

A perfect hand for strong pass systems, especially Regres!

1 = 8-12HcP, Any hand with shortness

What a totally worthless comment for the BIL forum!

To answer your question JB, I am happy to open 1 or to pass. I would probably open 1 so I can raise partner's 1M response to 2 and would bid 2 over 2. What tips the scales for me is that a diamond lead would be welcomed if we get outgunned in the auction.

West North East South

 -     -     Pass  1

 Pass  2    Pass  2

 Pass  Pass  Pass

I did open, holding both 4card majors passing didnt cross my mind, hoping to play in a major or 1nt - whats this 2!

I rebid 2 not wanting to encourage any more bidding. 2 made, but so did 3nt.

I would open. Rather than get bent out defening the choice, I just defer to ZAR 26 zar points, with spades you only "need 25". I alos like 4441 distributions.

I open 1!D.

The hand your partner had is not worth a 2!C bid, I think a simple 1NT (balanced hand, around 10 hcp, no four card major) is just about right, and should end the auction.

A second point, even if 2 is not game force, I think it does promise a second bid if game is not reached, ... and it is my believe the second bid can not be a pass.

Hi everyone

Playing standard methods, this is not nearly an opening bid in my style.

Pass and double for takeout 'if' the other side bids clubs. If partner opens, bid your suits 'up the line.'

Doesn't rebidding diamonds supposed to show 5/6 diamonds in standard methods?

If these two hands make 3NT. A lot of good things happened. Picture the result when a couple of hooks are 'offsides.' You really do not want to bid these kinds of hand to 3NT(except when you are vul. at IMPs.)

Has North seen you open an 11HCP hand before and rebid your 4 card diamond suit? I do not understand the pass of 2Ds 'if' the hand was worthy of a 2C reply.

Regards,

Robert

Completely agree (almost always) what Ben says here.

3-suiters are always a bit of a headache to describe (in most systems, and it's OK as they are like ~4% if i recall well). Given the awkwardness the (most probable) 2 response leads me to pass. I think pass would be my bid even with the Jack of spades.

with 13 nice points we have to open and 1d and 2d are the (partly inelegant) bids. After 2d if pd bids a 4c M I have to raise and they'll think I'm 5-4. Sigh.

edit: on a sidenote, your p is certainly not worth his 2c bid. Doubleton queens are NOT what will give us tricks or anything. His hand is just ugly, let alone the fact that it's anemic in HCP.

I'm in the Pass camp - barely.

I use Zars but I want 27. Yeah we have s but barely.

4441s look nice but are often troublesome, especially to bid; there's rarely a bid that's quite right unless you play funny systems.

1 more Ten and I'm in. There's a good chance I may have something to say later.

Clear pass for me. We're not making game unless p has an opening hand, and this hand is much easier to respond with than open. I won't open light unless I have a 5 card suit, and a rebiddable suit opposite any response. And rebidding on a FOUR card suit is not my cup of tea. As people have said though, with more texture in the suits, it might be worth upgrading to a 2NT rebid in which case opening is ok. Though I'll still probably pass.

Obvious 1 opener for me, any seat. Easy rebid if pard bids a major, and preempts opps out of their most likely fit, clubs. The only thing that can go wrong is PARD bidding 2 (as he did), but then you still have the contingency solution of 2 (which you used).

All in all, I think bidding was pretty good, although I might have chosen 1NT instead of 2on pard's hand.
