also a question I am curious about does this sandwich NT (if I have used it correctly) promise 5spades in this intstance or 5 of the higher suit

Hi,

 

the bid is ok, although I would a double,

it keeps the bidding lower.

 

The 1NT bid does not promisea 5 card spade

suit, usually it promises a more shapely hand,

which lesser HCP strenghtcompared to a X.

The hand is very defensive. I prefer pass at imps, but who am I to argue with sucess? :D

Dbl. 1NT suggests that the lower-ranking suit is longer.

Not a bad bid really - you want to strive to show both suits.

Here's how I usually play sandwich (1X - pass - 1Y - ?):

Dbl = other suits, equal length/quality

1NT = other suits, lower suit is longer/better

2X = other suits, higher suit is longer/better

This way partner knows what the better suit is. So in this auction you'd bid 2♣ to show longer ♠.

 

Perhaps you wonder why it's "longer/better". We consider only decent suits as their full length. For example, 95432 is considered a 4 card suit, so with ♠95432-♦AKxxx you'll bid 1NT to show the lower suit.
