A few hands from the last few days. For fun, I'll score them afterward, and you can see how you did in terms of actual IMPs.

1. Good opps; JTxxx, void, Kxxxx, Qxx. NV and pard opens a 15-17 NT. What is your plan?

2. Good opps; Q98xxx, void Kxxx, Qxx. Vul; pard opens 1 and bids 3 over your 1 response. Now what?

3. Randoms; Kx, KJxx, Axx, AKxx. White / Red; pard opens 2 in 2nd seat weak. RHO overcalls 3; you call?

4. Good opps; KQJxxx, AKx, xxx, x. White / Red. LHO opens 5, pass, pass to you

1, transfer then pass unless partner superaccepts.

2, 3S.

3, 3N.

4, pass.

1. 2 transfer, pass any non-super-accept, bid game over super accepts

2. Pass and hope to make

3. 3N, even at this heat, 2nd seat is the seat for the strongest preempt, and Kxxxxx and out gives me a play

4. 5: I can be pushed around....yes, p p double will make me puke, but I've been sick before.

I know half the boards, so will answer the ones I don't know.

1. Transfer and then pass unless super.

3. I think 3N is our best shot at game, so would bid that. I can imagine certain layouts where 5 is a better game. E.g. xxx Axx QJxxxx xx, but I think it's too big a view not to go for 3N. If partner has xxx xx KQJxxx xxx for example, then 3N is our only chance at game.

1. If I've got Stayman then 2 available as a 5 card invite, I'll use it. If pard raises, 4 may well be reasonable; If pard bids 2N (max, doubleton spade) then I'll bid 3, expecting to play there. Otherwise xfer like everyone else.

2. 3 - staying low with misfits may often be good, but going off in 3 instead of making game isn't.

3. 3NT.

4. Unless I know that lefty tends to preempt aggressively, I'll venture 5.

Transfer . If LHO doubles I'll bid again, if he passes I'll pass 2.

2. Good opps; Q98xxx, void Kxxx, Qxx. Vul; pard opens 1♥ and bids 3♥ over your 1♠ response. Now what?

3NT, it's definitely an option

3. Randoms; Kx, KJxx, Axx, AKxx. White / Red; pard opens 2♦ in 2nd seat weak. RHO overcalls 3♠; you call?

Pfff this is the most difficult one imo. I guess I won't make 3NT unless I can trust partner having KQxxxx, so it depends on opening style here...

4. Good opps; KQJxxx, AKx, xxx, x. White / Red. LHO opens 5♣, pass, pass to you

Dbl, keeps some options open.

1) Transfer and Pass, unless partner

makes a super accept, in which case

I will bid game.

If I have the option to show an inv.

hand with 5-5 I will do that, but I dont

have this option.

2) Pass

3) X,

If I got the vul. right, we are white and they

are red? I can probably beat 3S alone, so

any tricks partner can provide will make us

getting plus.

4) 5S, again we are white and they are red, i.e.

in case they know, what they are doing, 5C may

well make.

With kind regards

Marlowe

1. Transfer then pass (or bid game over a superaccept)

2. I guess 3....mainly to make sure we get the right strain. Maybe pass opposite an aggressive pard

3. 3NT

4. 5s

1. Pass. I have enough values for 1N to make and two possible sources of tricks. If the opps have enough good hearts to make 1N a poor contract, I would expect LHO to balance. (I also will not be surprised to find partner holding a 5 card heart suit along with a doubleton spade).

2. 3S. With a partner I trust, 4H.

3. 3N.

4. Double.

Don't think that 1 hand means anything. The value of this exercise is to see how others think, not whats the best result on these hands.

1. I made a typo in the 1st hand; you had Kxx of clubs instead of Qxx. Gripe if its enough to do something else. 2 over 2 isn't an option, for many this shows the invite to 2N with 4 spades, since we play 4 suit transfers.

I transferred and raised. Its possible I have a 6 bagger, but this hand sure wants to play in a suit and I didn't open a weak 2 at green, so a 5 bagger is pretty likely. I caught pard with: AKxx, Qxxx, Qx, Axx (should pard super accept with these quacks? Only if you have the agreement that 3 shows a minimum).

The other table played 2 after Stayman followed by 2.

Push if you pass, Win 6 if you press on.

2. We are vul at IMPs, so I will sacrifice a digit before I miss a vul game. There's no reason why pard can't have spade support, even 3, but there's no reason why he needs to either. Some sort of Gazzilli 2 to work out the BW death hand would be nice, but its not available. For the record, I bid 3.

Pard had: void, AQ98xxx, AQT, Kxx and corrects to 4. The other table passes with your cards, so lose 6 if you bid on, push if you pass.

3. Who knows what the random holds? My first inclination was double, but we aren't cashing a lot of spade and diamond tricks. 3N needs pard to have KQ-6th or the A / K and a little fortune. Unfortunately pard was jokering in 2nd with: x, xxx, QT9xxx, QJx. I bid 3N of course and claimed -3 when the K didn't drop. RHO was jokering a little himself with: AQJTxxx, Q, xx, xxx (but he doesn't know the difference).

Pass (!) = +100 (win 2)

Double = +200 (win 3.4)

3N = -150 (lose 4.3)

4. My pard had this hand and I sympathize with his pass. We gave away a meaningless overtrick and he rolled 6. Pard holds: Txxxx, xx, AJxxx, K. 5 is -1.

I gave this hand to a few players I respect later, and thought 5 was clear though. One way to look at it is if you take either my hand OR the west hand (Ax, QTxxxxx, x, xxx), you make either 10 or 11 tricks with 5 rolling both times. The other table bid 5, so you lose 11 if you pass and push if you bid 5.

I have no idea what he'll do over a double. I'm guessing I'll bid 5, and I might bid 6 over 5. Since I know the hand, I can't be objective, so figure its 50/50 I will. 6 gets doubled, so you are -300. So lose 6 half the time and push 1/2 the time, so lose 3 if you double.

Congrats to Flytoox, Roland and Mike who did the best.
