Both were declared 3NT on the following hand from the WEST seat. [hv=d=w&v=n&n=shj8743dk764cj965&w=sa75hak65daq3c842&e=sqjt2hq2dt92cakq3&s=sk98643ht9dj85ct7]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Both got a diamond lead to the Queen, and both found the three suit-repeating squeeze on north (in Diamonds, clubs, and hearts) to make all 13 tricks. Their lines varied only slightly due to the suit that north gave up. Basic play, win Diamond queen, cross in clubs, hook spades (winning 3 rounds). On third round of spades, north has to give up his guard in one of the suits. Cash that suit to squeeze north again. Good play, by good guys. The triple squeeze will not repeat because two threats are in the WEST hand. South gives up clubs and then (in Clyde love' termonology) there is no "upper" hand threat. So the three suit squeeze gains only one trick (no repeat). It was an expert play for them to find the three suit repeater, it would be a world class play for south to work out not to cover to prevent this three suit repeater. Good defensive point. It takes really top defenders to a) not cover the diamond, and :P for north to give up clubs when maybe West has only 3 hearts and north can see giving up clubs cost a trick at matchpoints. This would be the ending with and without Diamond JACK cover at trick one... on the third spade Number 1, EAST covers as in real world North Tx Qx 9x AKx--J9xxKxJ95 Ritong/Uday A AKxx Ax x On Spade ACE, west has to discard a Heart, allowing four hearts to win in south, a diamond, allowing both ACE and Ten of diamonds to win, or a club, allowing three club winners. Let;s assume he discards a club (to compare with second ending). Now win Diamond ACE (vienna coup) and then two clubs to reach this ending.... North T Qx 9 x--J9xxK-- Ritong/Uday -- AKxx x -- On last club, south throws away the little diamond but what if WEST? IF a heart, South wins four hearts, if a diamond, the dummy 9 is good. Now compare with ending where EAST not play the diamond JACK. The Diamond South would be throwing away would be the QUEEN-- but then EAST's diamond JACK would be bigger than the dummy TEN, so West could throw the Diamond King and EW win one trick. Note however what would happen if WEST threw the diamond instead of the club on the spade ACE. This would make it easier for North to hold hearts and give up clubs, even at the cost of a trick. You are half right. At ritong table, the bidding went 1NT stayman and Hearts bid by West. At Uday table, uday opened 1C and when his partner bid 1S he jumped to 2NT raised to 3NT so no heart was bid there. Ben seems hard not to be at 6nt following that auction, eh?
