An alternative to J2N+Bergen major support bids

[MODIFIED TO MAKE IT CLEAR]

I like to share the following structure as an alternative to J2N + Bergen:

1M opening:

1M-2N

2N = Inv with some splinter, declarer now bids:

4M = game

3c/3d = If your singleton is that minor then we should not play game.

3M = If your singleton is the other major then we should not play game.

1M-3c

3c = forcing game with 4+ support (the agree with your pd the subsequent bids)

1M-3d

3d = Inv without a singleton and 4 card support.

1M-3M

3M = barrage

1M-3OM/4m

3OM = Void. Inv+ values.

4m = Void. Inv+ values.

3N = 5 trumps, 1 defensive trick. Preemptive.

4M = 5 trumps, 0 defensive tricks. Preemptive.

Any feedback is welcome. I'll try to post my analysis later if I think it's needed, the community analysis of this structure can be a lot better than mine.

Hi Luis,

I have a partner who likes to play something he calls Super Major Answering and Relay Tool or SMART. I honestly don't know if this is his own invention, adapted from something similar, or if it is well known and I just don't know about it.

The basic premise is that a jump to 2NT shows some kind of raise, typically a mini-splinter or a maxi-splinter. The relay is in the name because opener bids 3C to find out which. So it is similar in concept at least to what you are describing. We save 3C/3D/3H (over S) are for fit jumps, as are 4 level new suit bids. A caveat is that 1H-2S is SMART (to allow the bidding space), and 1H-2N is fit jump in SPADES...

I doubt that this is more theoretically sound than jacoby, and we have no simple game forcing raise (well 1M-3N is sorter raise).

First time i read and play same "SMART" structure is "ROMEX"( it was not answers but game tries ). Rebids for looking duplication are new to me ( i play another singleton instead of...) and are really nice invention in my point of view.

If you play same structure as answers, will be good to play it anywere is possible. Example(2/1):

1DI-1HE,

2HE-?: 2SP: any singleton; 2NT: SP suit; 3CL/DI - suit

Since you bring it up, Misho, I am fond of the Jacoby treatment that is in "Better Bidding with Bergen"

1M-2NT is "jacobyesque"

Opener rebids

3C - non min with singleton or big balanced hand

3D - ask for responders short suits (doubleton/singleton)

3H - some void

3S - minimum hand with singleton

3N - 6 card suit, no singleton

4C/4D - minimum but cheaper A or K

4H - (over 1S-2N) decent minimum no A/K either minor

4S (or 4H over 1H-4H) signoff attempt

There are some cute sequences in there as well...

Hi all,

Just to complete the structure quoted by Ben:

4C/D (+H when 1S) are decent minimum without singleton, decent minimum was explained in the book as King more than the absolute minimum.

I've played this structure+ all detailed continuations for more than 4 years and it worked very well, although needed much brain work.

Thank you Ben & Rado, i believe it will work well. But i dont like to play heap of rare meeting complex structures. In my opinion "Perfect is enemy of good", hehe. I play probably far of best simple 2NT relay for min(3CL) or max with singleton by transfer, as in all other realy sequences. Reason except it is very simple is that nobody can said will my p want to know something else if i am min. If he want - i am still at 3CL!, if not - opp dont know nothing about my distribution.
