BBO unavailable (main bridge club)

Some day ago I couldn't access BBO main bridge club. A short message informed me I couldn't, because apparently I had done something like to use the boot button to much.

But I was sure to have NOT USED it.

After some time I discovered what's (probably) happened:

- a friend of mine went my house on july, using my pc with his nick;

- the same friend went also in other houses (at least one), using other pc with his nick

Well, ALL these pc were blocked.

For me it wasn't really a problem, and may be BBO is right doing this. I absolutely don't contest this. I simply think this explanation, if correct, should anyway be given.

You can be blocked from the main room automatically by the computer if you:

1) Boot too many people over a specific time period

2) You are yourself boot too often over a specific time period

3) you start bidding a hand, but do not finish playing it too frequently (again over a specific time period.

You can be blocked from joining tournaments if you abandon too many of them before they are over (again, over a specific time period).

I do not know, nor if I knew it would not tell you, what too many is in any of these cases, nor the time period in question.

Your main room ban still allows you a lot of things you can do. Team games, public and private clubs, kibitz, vugraph, and at least pay tournaments and I think all tournaments are open to you.

As far as whether it was you or someone else using your computer who did these things, the automatic banning software doesn't test for that. Writing abuse might help, but abuse is often very busy and these bans are very short duration, so Abuse might very well not even get to your email before the suspension is lifted anyway.

And I am going to add this:

Sorry, but

1) Unless there is clear evidence you are not the person you claim not to be, probably nothing will be done.

2) Even if you are not the person you claim not to be, your computer, your username/password, these are your privilages and your responsibilities to safeguard if you value your membership.

Its your duty to ensure nobody comes in and take control of your computer to do something distasteful to others.

So it is going to be rare that I, or anyone doing abuse will lift any such bans. As mentioned, they are short bans, and you are still able to do other things.

The best thing to do is to tell whoever abused our system that they have inconvenienced YOU by their flagrant disregard of others.

Many of us play occasionally from computers with wide public access (hotels, net-cafes etc. ) What is the best way in this situation to protect myself from responsibility for "bad things" other members could done using these PC's and avoid to be banned for it?

To create always a new nickname for this one occasion? and never use it on the own machine?

You only need to be concerned about what others have done on the computers you've used.

If someone (XYZ) was abusing the system on that internet cafe PC, and you use the PC too, and XYZ gets banned, you will not be able to use that net cafe's PC, because it is banned.

But in your own normal computer, if you haven't let XYZ used that computer, you will probably be alright.

If you have let XYZ use your own computer, innocently thinking he's your friend and will do no harm, then my earlier stated point about safeguarding your privilages and responsibilties comes into play again.

I agree it's my responsability permitting my pc to be used or not. But main problem (someone had understand, but not all I think) is that I give my pc on july for a night... and apparently now I'm always responsable for other behaviour.

Anyway my words were a simple information. It was a short duration, I could do a lot of thing, etc.etc. so shortly told it wasn't a great problem. But I was sure it wasn't my fault: that's all :P
