Version 4.9.3 Available for Testing

Recommended Posts

If you have not tried BBO Version 4.8.7 or later, I suggest you use the link below to read about it before upgrading to 4.9.3:

There is now an option to turn off emoticons in chat (default=on). This can be found in the Chat tab of the Options dialog.

There are some new options available on the General tab of the Options dialog as well. Actually these options have been around for a long time, but before 4.9.3 there was no easy way to change their values directly through BBO.

And in theory I have fixed the bugs that people reported in 4.9.2, but as usual I will not be surprised if I managed to break something else in the process.

We are starting to make preparations for an official release. Most likely we will first arrange it so that people get a new version when they go to our web site to download the BBO software for the first time. At the same time we may announce the availability of the new version in the Lobby News.

Our goal is to be ready for this at least a few days before I have to go to Hawaii for the ACBL Fall Nationals (I think I leave around November 14).

Assuming that this goes well and assuming we can create some reasonable documenation for the new version in time, I suspect we will make the new version available to all BBO members by automatic download around the end of November (but this is far from certain).

Since the new BBO is so much different from our latest official version, it is important that a lot of testing gets done before we make it available to the masses. You can really help us by doing things like:

- If you have an old computer (especially one with Windows 95 or 98), please try 4.9.3 on that computer and let us know what happens.

- If anyone out there has access to a machine that is running Windows Vista, please let us know how BBO works under that operating system.

- If you are logged in to BBO and are feeling bored, try to break it - do a lot of mouse movements, left click and right click on random things, jump from table to table, switch to different modes (Control-C, Control-V, Control-F, Control-W...).

- We need to make sure that I have not broken anything in Classic View. I suspect that most of the people who are using a new version now are using the non-Classic View. If you feel like switching back to Classic View (Control-C will do the trick) for a while and doing some testing in that mode it would be very helpful.

If you find any problems please let me know either by e-mail (fred@bridgebase.com) or by a Forums post.

Please note that, although new development on the BBO client itself has pretty much stopped, neither the structure/content of the menus nor our policies concerning ads are finalized. We have the flexibility to change things without forcing you to download a new version.

Instructions for upgrading to version 4.9.3 follow.

I suggest you use the first method, but however you do this, please make sure you exit the BBO program COMPLETELY before you start the download process.
