Stephen Tu
[hv=d=s&v=n&s=sakt9xxxhkqdajcxx]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv]uncontested. 1♠-1nt-? I tried to cover all bases with the poll choices though some I think won't necessarily garner any votes.
jillybean
Tricky I tend to blast 3nt, often with disastrous results. jb
Guest Jlall
Close to me between 3S and 4S, but I'm just going to go with 3 at MP. I think there are more hands where he'll pass where game is good than hands he'll pass where game is bad. A lot of this depends on style as well (do you bid 3S pretty light? do you respond pretty light? etc). We also might get to a superior 3N if partner bids that over 3S (I will pass it). Bidding 3D is just lol to me.
whereagles
3♠ or 4♠, depening how I feel.
kgr
I voted 4S and afterwards saw it is MP's. At Imp's I would always bid 4, at MP's it is close between 3 and 4. With these honours in short suits I probably bid 3S at MP's. Maybe 3NT is the best contract.
P_Marlowe
Hi, 3S, I can understand 4S, but if 1NT was forcingwith 4-7 a spade fit, you may find it hard to get your 10th trick.Even if playing IMP's partner will raise most of the time, if it is right, so 3S. With kind regardsMarlowe
sceptic
hard choice, I opted for game with pick up but with pard I would def only bid
suokko
2♣ Gazzilli. But if not that then 3♠, THis hand has a lot more in hcp that playing strenght. maybe 3NT is the best spot.
HeartA
Clear 3S to me. HCPs in red suit (especially KQ) are not good, I don't bid 4S. With 7th spades, I don't think NT is a choice at all.
Finch
I play methods over a semi-forcing/forcing NT so I don't have this problem, but even if you don't.... If you open 1NT with a 5-card major and a balanced 15-17, what do you think 2NT shows? 18-19 balanced? If so, that leaves 3NT to show long spades. You can decide this hand isn't good enough, but in my view the choice is between 3S (invite) and 3NT (long spades, game force).
awm
I'd bid 4♠ with this hand, as my 3♠ jump rebids are quite aggressive (pretty much any 15 with a decent 6-card suit). The definition of 3NT depends a bit on partnership. You could define it as "a good hand with a long spade suit" but I think most people define it more carefully as a hand where 3NT will often be the right contract (for example would you rebid 3NT on AQJxxxx x Ax AKx). Despite the semi-balanced shape I don't think it's all that likely 3NT is right here. You basically need spades to run (otherwise opponents can surely knock out a stopper somewhere and then run their tricks) and if spades run you'll almost always make 4♠ (there are nine easy tricks and pd needs some help in clubs for 3NT to have play). Move the ♥Q to spades and I'd be happier with a 3NT bid.

pclayton
3♠. The AK-7th is nice, but the doubleton honors and 7=2=2=2 sucks. K and R puts it at 20.95, but thats before we know pard doesn't have a big spade fit.
keylime
3♠ at MPs. Need to involve pard. 4♠ at IMPs. The game bonus is priceless. There are many hands that pard can have for 1NT that lack spade support and have club values. What I'm concerned with is something like a 1-5-3-4 hand (or worse) and not being able to get to dummy (imaging JH and KJ of clubs with the J of spades stiff). gwnn
Because much of the field will be in 4♠, I'm looking forward to getting a solid plus score with 3♠= or 3NT+1. (and besides, if 3♠ is 16-18 with 6+ cards, why not use this descriptive bid?)
sathyab
It looks like the only guys playing in that sectional two weeks ago in San Jose were the 4s bidders. We would have gotten some Match Points had some of you 3s'ers showed up :D Sathya
