This hand created a bit of a stir at our last pairs league. There were many auctions, and I know of several of them. Depending on interest, I will try to give continuations for the most popular choices. So shall we begin?

You are dealer. You are playing a natural based system with no unusual gadgets. What is your first call?

If you choose Other (you know where to go)

as usual, I think the best way to describe a big two suiter without many HCP is to pass first (limiting my hand) and then make some 2 suited bid later (michaels or unusual NT) at the appropriate level. The problem with opening this hand is that you are never going to stop bidding in a competitive auction and partner will have no idea you have this little in the way of HCP.

This plan has a lot more going for it here than usual, since we have the majors. We will pretty much always have time to show both suits beyond 4M (well, unless LHO preempts with 6).

If this hand were, say, hearts and clubs, I like the plan to open 2, and bidding 3 or 4 later.

Given the choices available, I think pass is clear, as of course is intervention later. Opening 1S on this is running the risk of misleading partner who, when she doubles a minor suit contract by the opps later, will believe me to have far more defensive strength.

This hand type is an excellent illustration as to why some sort of 2 suited opening should be in our arsenal.

Pass

Actually, bids for major 2 suiters aren't that urgent. You have an easy butt-in in at all levels except if it goes

pass 1NT pass 3NT

?? (ooooops)

Double - should show any 2-suiter.

Why? Aren't you ever dealt AKQJx or AKQTx of a major?
