Bidding Plan

Here's an odd little hand that cropped up during a social game this afternoon

Partner and RHO opponent pass.

You hold

[hv=s=sa72hak9762da7ckq]133|100|[/hv]

What's your bidding plan?

Open 1 and jump in hearts (rebid 3)?

Open 1 and jump in clubs (rebid 3)?

Open 1 and reverse in Spades 2?

Open 2NT?

Something that I've missed?

I absolutely despise 2 card jump shifts, but sadly I realize that sometimes they're neccesary in standard bidding. If there is every any option though I'll take it.

Over 1N I think 2S is an easy rebid, you at least have 3 of them and theres no danger that partner will insist on spades since he didnt bid 1S. Over 1S I grudgingly bid 3C seeing no other option.

Open 1H Richard and the next bid depends on what partner bids. As YOU well know, the Poles have a nice bid here if pd bids 1S. 2NT shows 3 card support, 6 of the opened Major and a fine hand. I guess we are not playing anything as enlightened as P. Club, so my next bid will be in NT natural. I refuse to jump shift in non existent suits which appears to be a very prevalent treatment in the US from the posts I have read in the past.

I agree with Ron on this.

I was playing this with Justin...

To say that we don't have many (any?) firm agreements would be an understatement. While I'd love to drag out any one of a number of different gagets to handle this, I was stuck with my concept of what Justin's concept of standard would be

I was originally tempted by a 2NT opening, wanting to avoid the whole rebid problem. However, I all the Aces and Kings made me feel that the hand was suit oriented. So, I went with 1, planning to wing it. Justin responded 1.

Here's the full hand and the complete auction

P - (P) - 1 - (P)

1 - (P) - 3 - (P)

3 - (P) - 4 - (P)

5 - (P) - 5 - (P)

5 - (P) - 6 - (X)

All pass

In retrospect, I probably should have cue 4 over 3

A very common understanding in standard that I would assume is on by default with a strong partner: 3NT after a 1 over 1 is to play but based on a long suit. Perfect for your hand. With a seventh heart and a couple of HCP less, rebid 4. Crude and old fashioned, but the best available in the system.

Yes but I do not think your hearts are long or strong enough for 3nt in standard.

Why did they X this. I hope you made it Richard; its cold

yes he wrapped it... the opps Xed out of tilt.

PS, would anyone bid my hand differently? Start with 4C? I felt I was definitely worth 1 move over 4H... give partner 2 less spades and 2 more clubs and you will see why :)

I don't see what is so bad about 1-1-3NT, or opening 2 on these cards. These may not be perfect, but with a random partner shouldn't this be better than 1-1-3?

1-1NT-2 seems ok too.

-Noble

I don't think that the suit quality of the hearts is remotely sufficient to consider 3N.

A 2 opening never even occured to me. (I only have 8 tricks in hand. 5 hearts, 2 bullets and a club)

I'm sure lots of people would bid the hand differently, but I am not one of them: not over 3, and I suspect that this is a problem that would be rejected if submitted to the BW MSC, for being too obvious :D

3 seems unavoidable: how can you suppress QJ in partner's primary suit? (As I am sure you were thinking B) )

Then you are trapped over 4. You have 3 working cards and your bidding, while not denying those values, is consistent with none.

Qxxxx xx Kxx Jxx: you'd bid the same way.

So you can hardly pass 4. Now partner is caught in his own trap: opposite Kxxx Qx xx Axxx he has to reach slam.

All in all, this hand is a good advertisement for strong club methods :P

For what it is worth, my auction would be 1 1 3 (artificial) 3 (asking) 3 gf one-suiter in .

Now 4 by North as a cue bid, 4 4 4N ( cuebid, 4 would be keycard) 5 ppp
