paulg
For all the 2♥ bidders, partner just bids 3♦ so the ball is back in your court. p
Guest Jlall
4C for me over 2D. I pretty much just want to force partner to cuebid hearts if he can.
ArcLight
>4C for me over 2D. I pretty much just want to force partner to cuebid hearts if he can. What would a bid of 2♠ mean? Is that asking for a stopper? To make game requires pard to have one of: trump ace, heart K, or Q.Slam requires 2 of these cards, teh Ace and a good lie in hearts. The overcaller must have some values since they arent in Dimes or Spades, probably clubs and maybe hearts. I like the ♥ game try, followed by 5♦. Even with wasted values in Clubs, game is reasonable if the heart honors are split. If pard has a heart honor and the trump ace and sees you go to game, they may raise to slam. cherdano
IMO there is no way we stay out of game with this hand. (Even if partner has no read honor, we may make on an endplay vs LHO, who rates to have the points given his overcall despite the crappy spade suit). Anyway, I am ok with being in slam opposite the ♥K and nothing else. So I would bid 4C (I think this is obvious, it shows this hand type, why not let partner in on the secret), and 5C over the likely 4D. HeartA
4C (splinter) or 5C (exclusive). I voted for the later.
helene_t
2♥ has the merrit of discouraging a heart lead, so we may be able to make slam with no red honor by partner. I don't understand 5♣ - it doesn't tell us what partner has in hearts.
pclayton
I don't have a plane to catch, so I'll start with 2♥. Over 3♦ (good thing pard didn't bid 3♣), I'll try 3♠, and 4♠ over 4♦.
paulg
Partner holds ♠ 8 x♥ 8 x x♦ A 4 3♣ 8 x x x x 3NT is makes easily as the clubs are blocked and there is a simple endplay for the overtrick. 5♦ makes when you squeeze and endplay the overcaller who has both heart honours. [Apologies, but as in many problems I forgot to mention a key bit of info - namely we play dutch doubleton style so that the 1♦ bid guaranteed four diamonds and is normally five in an unbalanced hand. Luckily it still appears to be a good problem in itself]
