barmar
I just installed a trial version of CrossOver Mac, which is a port of WINE to Intel Mac OS X. I successfully ran the BBO installer, but I'm having trouble getting into the application. I have LINUX_WIN=Y and BROWSER_TYPE=C set in bbover.ini, just as appropriate on Linux. What happens is that it logs in and displays the lobby OK, and even speaks "Welcome", but then it crashes. It looks like it's dying when it wants to display the news window, so I suspect it's something browser-related. Anyone have any ideas?
barmar
Well, I was able to login by changing to BROWSER_TYPE=E, which skips over the news. Now it looks like there's an issue with the symbol font. Suit symbols don't show up in the bidding diagram, movie, or in the hand display when I don't use fancy cards. barmar
Another glitch: When I go into a money bridge area, and it rearranges the button bar, they aren't laid out properly. Each one seems to be assigned half its proper space, and they overlap each other. They still seem to work, though.
uday
What about non-mb areas? How close is it to functioning normally ? ( do you have a link to the product? I'll try it on a x86 mac laptop i have lying about when the owner is not around )
Gerardo
Those (except the browser issue), happens with Wine on Linux too. You need the Symbol.ttf file from Windows installation.
barmar
I figured out where to put symbol.ttf, and now the suits display properly. Non-MB areas seem to display OK. I haven't yet tried playing bridge with it, but kibbitzing is working now. barmar
I just played a session of MBT on my MacBook, and except for the scrunched up buttons it worked fine.
barmar
So I've been playing around with this some more. I installed mozcontrol like on Linux, and changed BROWSER_TYPE=C, but it still crashed when it tried to display lobby news. Then I changed to BROWSER_TYPE=A. Now I get the lobby news window, but it doesn't contain news, it says something like "If you're seeing this, BBO is not installed properly". So I'm back to BROWSER_TYPE=E. I never really cared much for lobby news, anyway -- it's mostly just ads.
Gerardo
For type A, you need atl.dll, and make it native. But last Wine versions support MSHTML natively (no need for MozControl), so I'd expect CrossOver having no such need either.
barmar
I copied atl.dll from a Windows machine and set BROWSER_TYPE=A. Now the news window pops up, but it's empty. What does it mean to "make it native"?
Gerardo
Tell CrossOver you are using the native version of the DLL instead of the builtin one.
barmar
That doesn't seem to have fixed it. The news window doesn't pop up at all at login time (like when I use BROWSER_TYPE=E). When I click on the news button, the empty window comes up.
uday
You need the Symbol.ttf file from Windows installation. I figured out where to put symbol.ttf, and now the suits display properly. Say, what is the installation process for symbol.ttf? The basic BBO is up & running, but I can't figure out what needs to be done to get this working. Gerardo
Copy it to the location CrossOver translates to C:\Windows\Fonts (probbably ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts).
barmar
The location on Mac OS X is ~/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/bottles/bottlename/drive_c/windows/fonts.

Neo
Thanks to all for your prior input. This works, mostly: I have seen caps on/off not taking, and a freeze when I canceled a quit. The bidding and play are fine. 1. bbover.ini settings: [sYSTEM]LINUX_WINE=YBROWSER_TYPE=E 2. Put the symbol.ttf from your windows machine into your Mac's Fonts folder. Have fun! JanM
I just thought I'd report that thanks to this thread and a little extra help from Barry (BarMar), I seem to be successfully running BBO on my brand new MacBook Pro without Windows! :D I hate Windows - it seems as if every time I try to do something in it, it doesn't work. Haven't tried anything except BBO, but the only other things I ever used Windows for were BBO related (Bridge Master, some of the books), so I'm hoping they'll work just as well. For anyone else wanting to do this, the only tricky parts were editing the bbover.ini - I opened it in text edit and changed the WINE=N to Y and the Browser Type to E, and installing the Symbol font. It was easy to follow Barry's instructions (posted above) for where to put it, my problem was getting it, since the only PC I had was Virtual PC on my old Mac and in order to move the font file from that to this Mac, I had to find it on the PC (it was in C -> Windows -> Fonts) and then drag it to the Mac desktop and email it from there to the new Mac. Without the Symbol font, the screen resolution looked wrong, with it, everything is lovely - at least so far. Haven't tried playing yet, just watching Vugraph. But it certainly looks fine. So thanks to everyone who's contributed to this thread and especially Barry for a little extra hand-holding.
Gerardo
Lasts Wine versions (starting with 0.9.25 I think, give or take one), don't need LINUX_WINE=Y.
barmar
I'm not sure what version of WINE is in the beta version of CrossOver for Mac. I'm not even sure how to find out what version it is -- when you use the "About CrossOver" menu, you just get the CrossOver version, not the underlying WINE version.
