Unusual NT

Vul vs not, you hold:

S: X

H: QJXXX

D: XX

C: AKXXX

Auction goes:

W N E S

1S P 2S ?

Easy, what Larry Cohen called superunusual Notrump in his book "to bid or not to bid." Simply bid 2NT.... any two suiter. If partner bids 3D or 4D, those are both pass/correct so you can correct to 4H.

Hehe, Ben, still remember that hand I raised to 3N after your unusual 2NT?

here my hand is:

S: AXX

H: KTX

D: QT9XXX

C: X

pd did bid 2N. Thinking 3N is the most like game and pd has minors, I raise pd's unusual 2N to 3N. 4H seems easy to make. So 2N after 1S-p-2S-? is two suiter. Is it same after 1H-p-2H-? or 2N over 2H defines minor two suiter?

Another hand in the biginner/experts tourney:

S; QJXXXX

H: QJXXX

D: X

C: X

After 1c-p-1d-? Is 2N showing this hand? what about 1N and DBL?

a) 1C-P-1D-2N

2N=?

:) 1C-P-1D-1N

1N=?

C) 1C-P-1D-DBL

DBL=?

suppose 1C AND 1D are natural

Here i use following system:

1x-p-1y-? (x and y are any suits)

1NT = other suits, no opening value

Dbl = other suits, opening value

2NT = 55+ normal 2 suiter (any) with 6-7 losers.

So yes, 2NT shows the above hand. 1NT only recuires 4-4 in the other suits

As well as the potential of the unusual NT, some people play "Leaping Michaels" in this position - where 4C shows 5-5 in clubs and hearts, and 4D shows 5-5 in diamonds and hearts.

I play liberal leaping Michaels over a weak two opening bid, but not on this auction.

Hi all!

If you think your hand worth opening, interesting way is "Meta overcalls". I posted it in "expert" section with examples. 3CL bid here show 4+CL-4+HE, opening hand, unbalanced, not enough strength for 4CL leaping Michaels.

I almost agree, of course I have to argue ;D.

If I bid 1 NT I have at least 9 cards in the 2 unbid suits, 5-4 and most of the time my 5 card is the major. 2 NT, I always have both minors at least 5-5.

I'd bid just 3h. If pd can't raise 3h to 4h I don't think we can make a game. Sure 5c might make on some layouts but that would be very very strange.

I am all for trying for game, but this hand is not the one to place so much emphasis on hearts with a 3H bid on QJxxx. I think the right bid is 2NT, competiting for the part-score first, game second. You have the unbalanced hand and if you pass with this very good distribution, you place too much pressure on partner to balance with what might be a 3-3-4-3 hand and some scattered values. OBAR anyone???

3h looks wrong but I like the bid. I agree 2NT is a better bid but I just think 3h will be the winner imp-wise in the long term.

ben's talking about using 2nt not as unusual per se but as one of bergen's many "obar" (Opponents Bid And Raise) bids... it's only when they raise a suit that 2nt isn't lower 2 but any 2... can't really lose the heart suit, if it's there, unless there's a double fit.. then, i think, it would go undiscovered.. so luis' 3h is good in that situation, but to me only in that situation.. pard is supposed to pull to lowest suit he has 3+ cards in.. unless 6+ in another maybe

love him or hate him, bergen had a lot of great ideas
