Being my first post at this forum, it better be representative of my major experience with this game:

I made a mistake, but at least it was yet a new one!

Bidding went:

pass-(pass)-1-(1),

2-(3)-pass-(pass),

3-(pass)-3NT-(4),

Dbl-all pass

Opponents bid naturally, whereas my 1 was either natural or 15-19 bal, pd's 2 was 6-9 hcps with 5+c and less than 4c , my pass was 15-16(17) bal, pds 3 showed a stopper, and his Dbl was to discourage further bidding.

Out came 4 covered by 6.

How do you plan the defense?

If I am reading the auction right...

Declarer has 4513 shape or something close. He may need to ruff four black cards in dummy or potentially 3-4 diamonds in his hand.

Rise K and plan to lead another trump when I am in. If/when I am in after that I will try to force dummy using the clubs. Hop dA if led from dummy to guard against stiff K. If partner's count indicates a 3-card diamond holding then may need to cash black tricks to prevent declarer discarding all of his clubs/spades (depending on his shape)

Best I can give only knowing play from dummy.

I will play a low trump at trick one. This may be critical.

If he plays a from dummy, rise with the A and watch partner's card: if he shows an odd number, cash out In case declarer has an unlikely KQ tight in .

An even number, exit the (carefully preserved) trump K. Note that had you played the K at trick 1 and declarer exits the K, you win and a low puts declarer in dummy, a trick ahead.

In fact, if declarer is Jxxx AQxxx K Axx he makes unless you defend as indicated.

BTW, the bidding looks weird to me: East ought to bid 4 early while West almost certainly has a hand on which he has a good expectation of beating 3N, with little chance of making 4 opposite a 3 bid, unless he has seen East bid before :)..... All constructions I cam up with had West with a guard or North with 6+, neither really making a lot of sense on the auction.

You are close, but I am sure you can do a little better :)

100% correct, mikeh, that is the clue:

No matter how indifferent it may look, don't use that dead K in trick 1.

The board was played in live bridge (not on the net), and as far as I (South) noticed, the bidding went smooth all the way, so I was not even near to calling the TD. However, you are right mikeh, the 4 bid from West was much more succesful than obvious, all white.
