Raising one's own preempts

[hv=d=s&v=n&s=skqt8xxhjt9xdxxxc]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv]In first seat you open a weak-only multi 2. You may deplore the outside 4-card major, but this is ok by agreement.

LHO doubles (on asking, you are told that it is "takeout". "Takeout of what?", you ask. "Diamonds, of course" says the opponent and looks at you as if you are slightly crazy.

Partner bids 2, pass-or-correct.

RHO bids 3.

At this point you realise that you've miscounted your hand. You actually hold:

[hv=d=s&v=n&s=skqt8xxhjt9xdxxxc]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv]

Bidding now doesn't exist systemically, so there's no danger that partner will play you for a strong hand.

But is it more dangerous to pass or to bid?

Is your answer affected by scoring or vulnerability?

It is WAY more risky to bid 3 now than opening 3 the first round.

Still, opps don't look too sharp, so you might get away with it. But I think they might have fixed themselves already. If LHO doesn't bid 3NT now, they'll have missed a game. Give him the chance to guess wrong: pass.

A couple of points: you really shouldn't ask "Takeout ow what", though I garee with your sentiments. Secondly pass now. The opps have exchanegd information so coming in now is too risky. UNLESS- what systemically does your partner's 2H bid mean? You say P/C, but what would a pass have been? What would a xx have been. IF you pd's bid suggest tolerance for both Ms, I would press on 1 level. Do you have these agreements?

Ron: pass would have been a suggestion to play 2X, and XX would have been to play in his own suit (I'd bid 2 whatever my hand).

So 2 exludes a certain number of hands without any major suit tolerance. It also more-or-less denies 3 or more s. So 1=2=5=5 or 1=2=4=6 might bid this way, but apart from that he'll have at least two spades, and I think he's odds on to have three (having denied three hearts).

I think 1=2=5=5 would be a pass of 2, it is only a suggestion to play after all. 1=2=4=6 is a 2 bid if I'm just trying to reach our best spot...but these things need to be mixed up a bit, you don't want 2:2, 3 telling the opps that we have a 9+card heart fit and that they have an 8+card spade fit.
