whereagles
Matchpoints, adv field, pard and opps. You hold, NV vs V, ♠ AJTxx♥ ♦ Jxx♣ AKJxx Pard RHO you LHO..1♦...1♥....1♠...4♥..4♠..pass..?? 1♦ = 3+ cards, 2/1 style1♠ = shows 5+ cards, usually 7+ hcp4♥ = preemptive You were just about to bid 5♣ when you realized pard might have bid 4♠ under pressure, and he usually overbids. So, slam or no?
hatchett
You have to make a move KQ9x xxx Axxx Qx is an good grand and presumably he will have more than this.
Free
I'd bid 5♣ since I want to try for slam and partner should show his ♦ control (if he has one). Partner should have 'something', which gets his hand close to 7 losers. Adding our 5 losers gets us in the slam zone, even if partner is minimum. For slam, losers usually work quite well in my experience... :(
Finch
We have to move. 4S might be stretched, but we can easily make a slam opposite hands that aren't worth 4S e.g. Kxxx Kxx Axx Qxx which is way, way short of a 4S bid. As Frances says a move is obvious here and I think 5♣ in search of a ♦ control is a sane way to continue... Alain
pclayton
4♠ might be a stretch, but there are a lot of monster hands pard can hold as well like KQxx, Axx, AKQxx, x. Grand is cold in spite of the wasted A♥. I think constructing hands where slam doesn't make is a tough exercise. I'll try 5♣ and over the expected 5♦; 5♥. david_c
I'd bid 6♠.

mikeh
Surely no bridge player would dream of passing here? If I only had one call, and I was going to be barred thereafter, I'd bid 6♠ and be worried about missing 7. Fortunately, I have no such restriction, so I make the obvious 5♣ bid, intending to follow over 5♦ with 5♥ and then 6♣ over 5♠.... I will get to grand opposite KQxx xxx AKQx xx.....he should bid 7 in my auction.... and will get to 6 if he rebids 6♦ or 6♠.
whereagles
Thx all. Hands were [hv=d=n&v=n&n=sq98hkqxdkqtxxcqx&s=sajtxxhdjxxcakjxx]133|200|Scoring: MPPard RHO you LHO..1♦...1♥....1♠...4♥..4♠..pass..??[/hv]As you can see, pard had just about the most horrible hand you can imagine for the bidding. Yet slam is playable, though you probably don't want to be in it unless you need it badly. The trump finesse is on, so you have a good chance to make it, even despite trumps being 4-1. There are a few ways for the defense to set this, as well as for declarer to mess up the play
