good hand for xfer advances

Recommended Posts

I have never really like the idea of xfer advances but this hand came up and it convinces me of the merits of it.

Pd holds:

S: KJXX

H: KXXXX

D: XX

C: QX

I hold:

S: XX

H: AXX

D: AXX

C: AKJTX

RHO opened 1D and I overcalled 2C (hopefully no one will disagree here). Pd has a tough choice. Should he bid 2H? (We play that response to 2-level overcall is NF) He finally goes with 2D and I jump to 3N and that is down 1. If 2H is F1, then we may stil find 4H. But it seems xfer advances here really give you the chance to have your cake and eat it.

Yes, what´s wrong with

1D 1NT P 2D xfer

P 2H P 2S

P 4H

(now played the wrong way up, unfortunately as you really want to be in hearts by north)

Ok, assuming you start with 2 (which is not unreasonable at all IMO). What is wrong with 2? I really don't understand. I admit playing 2H in a 5-2 fit would not be great, but you definitely won't miss game, and you have a good chance to find your best strain.

P.S.: I am not sure this is a good hand for transfer advances. Transferring with 2D and then 2S would be forcing to me and feels like an overbid.

I overcall 1NT too, if only I know what my pd's cards are, hehehe

Be real, the prominent feature is the suit, and with Aces and Kings instead of QJs,

this is hand is suit-oriented. Nothing is wrong to overcall 2.

never tried transfer advance seriously, seems to me it is not easy to use.

praticially, I play new suit forcing, EXCEPT 2 over 1, it seems solve most of the problems.
