what's your bidding plan?

I start with 1. I have no heart fit, four spades, and not enough to bid at the two-level. This seems straight-forward.

If partner bids 1NT, I bid 2NT, a relay to 3, which I will pass.

If partner rebids 2, instead, I look att he opponents with a pitying look that they are so afraid to bid.

If partner bids 2, I am unhappy. But, I suppose I must false preference.

I pass 2.

I'll wait to discuss higher calls only if relevant.

1S, I will correct to 2H unless partner

bids 1NT, which I will pass.

Ugly but thats it.

With kind regards

Marlowe

PS: If you play weak jumb shifts you can bid 3C direct,

also 1NT followed by 3C is an option, but I am not convinced

that clubs play 2 tricks better that hearts, since you are at the

3 level.

I don't think this hand is quite right to commit unilaterally to 3... which I can do via 1N and then 3 over any 2 red suit... if he bids anything other than 2 red suit, I'm usually going to be ok.

I bid 1 to hear partner's rebid: if he rebids 2, I am passing, happy to be in a 6-1 2-level major rather than a possibly 6-1 or 6-2 3 level minor. That stiff J looks like adequate trump support in that context.

The only downside to 1 is a 2 rebid, in which case I bid 2 and hope that my J10 of will be useful.

Admittedly, I am comforted by the knowledge that I can reach 3 if he rebids 1N: for me 2N is a puppet to 3, showing a variety of hand-types, including a desire to play 3.

If I did not have that gadget, and if my red suit cards were 'x's, I'd choose 1N now, en route to 3 next.

What is :

1H-1S

1NT-2C

in standard 2/1

Is 2C a standard convention in 2/1 (eg nmf) or is it forcing anyway?

it is forcing, the only question is,

is it natural.

With kind regards

Marlowe

In natural methods, 2C is NOT FORCING, as the 1NT bid has limited the hand. Most people however play soem artificial checkback mechanism these days.

You play 2/1 GF with forcing NT, and hold the above hand.

Partner deals and opens 1H, and right hand opponent passes.

What is your bidding plan?

1, intending to bid 3 over 1N (2 would be conventional). Of course on a bad day, pard might bid 2 and I will pass that.

Note that the jump showing the weak 6-4 isn't standard treatment and some people play that as showing a massive black hand w/ slam interest!!!
