Given that this is a B/I thread, I have hidden my answer.

Pass seems clear. I have no reason to think that the opps cannot make 3... double would be a strong desire to defend: all the suits are in play in the auction, so double as takeout makes no sense. Some very good pairs play that a double in competitive auctions merely shows extras in the context of the bidding so far, but my understanding (and use) of this device depends upon a fit having been established, so that we have a landing spot. It may well be, and probably is, that partner has support along with a decent 5 card suit... but so what? And, absent an express agreement to the contrary, why can't he have long but very weak and tolerance for rather than genuine support?

I have no reason to consider this hand as possessing significant extras... I overcalled a relatively short, not overwhelmingly strong 5 card suit... I agree with the 2 bid, but this sure is not an especially powerful hand for it, and I have only 2s.

More importantly, given that I have the hand I held, why am I getting in front of partner? When you have conveyed a reasonably good picture of your hand, why make an uninvited call? As I say, I have no real defence, hence no double, and no extra offence, hence no bid.

If 2 is constructive pard will have like 9-10 hcp. In that case, and since this is matchpoints, I have to double. I do not think I've bid my hand because a 2-level overcall doesn't show the world. I consider this particular hand to have extras.

If you have no clue as to pard's standards for a 2 bid in this position, pass, since you don't know whether he is trying to improve the contract or showing a genuinely good hand.

I held this hand late last night. This was the auction at almost every table in the tourney including ours. Needless to say I got a poor result with my choice here. Since many choose an option I did not, I am interested to see how the forum members bid and their thought process.

I note no one has mentioned LOTT or FTL "fought the law" so far..... :)

Whatever 2s should be, since almost every table bid it, I think it can be called a reasonable bid. I would not post a hand where partner is making some wacky extreme bids and now we have to make a bid assuming she was sane :D

Are you sure they bid 3 as south? Could North have opened 2 (perhaps on a five card suit), or rebid 3 himself? I mean, could you check the auction at all the other tables to find it almost uniformaly went P-(1H)-2C-(P)-2S-(2D)-3S? Three spades seems too much to me, an too most others too.

Extras?

Aye yai yai.

Well, in the same way a 1x opening has 3 levels of strength,

11-14: min

15-17: med

18-20: max

an overcall can also be assigned 3 levels, e.g.

8-11: min

12-14: med

15-17: max

That's what I meant by "extras": overcaller is in level 2 of his overcall.
