nickf
[hv=d=w&v=n&s=sxhdakxxcqjt98765]133|100|Scoring: IMPed Swiss Pairs[/hv] LHO deals and opens 2S (4+S, 4+D, weak). We have an agreement that over these openings we can bid either of their suits naturally. Actually, the extent of the agreement covered direct overcalls, not advances. Partner overcalls 3H, RHO doubles for penalties. Your call. nickfsydney
pbleighton
4C. I am tempted to say wtp, but it seems that there is always a p :P Peter
cherdano
4C. I am tempted to say wtp, but it seems that there is always a p :P Peter The problem might be AP, +170 B) Quite a guess, but I would bid 5♣. Aren
pbleighton
"The problem might be AP, +170" Could be, but you have 5 losers, are void in p's suit, and righty has a good hand. 5C seems like a stretch, and it is matchpoints after all. mrdct
The event was actually IMPs not matchpoints.
pbleighton
"The event was actually IMPs not matchpoints." Ah, I saw Pairs and assumed... my bad. Still 4C for me, and I'll be happy to make it. Peter
Free
5♣ for me, and hope partner has just a few useful cards...
mrdct
Here is something to ponder: - LHO has a weak opening with ♠ and ♦ and even though he's non-vul in first seat, you can probably count on a few points in those suits in his hand. - RHO has a penalty double of 3♥ so presumably has some values in that suit. - Partner has overcalled at the 3-level, but looks like he probably doesn't have much of his values in ♥ so where has partner pulled this 3♥ bid from? nickf
Given my pd had been doubled in 3H and I wanted to explore slam, I briefly contemplated bidding 4H. What would this have meant? I was worried however, that the effect of the earplugs I was wearing at the time might induce my partner to think both my sight and hearing were affected and I hadnt seen the double. nickfsydney

Good question. I'm thinking he has something like KJ109xx in hearts, plus some stuff on the side, and stretched. Peter
Codo
4 Club. Pd may or may not have many values in Heart. But he never promised them in the minors. He surely has something in spades, else they would compete in that suit. So opposite KQxx, KQJxxx,xx,K f.e. I am even down in 4 Club...Sure, Axxx,Axxxxx,Qx,A makes slam, but how likely is this?
Gerben42
4♣ for me. An eight-card suit is called trumps. And if the auction continues pass pass 4♠, i pass and await partner's Double. My hand is 1048, I guess partner's hand rates to be 4621. Then give LHO something like 4252 that leaves for RHO: 4531.
Finch
5C.While 4H has an element of cuteness about it, I don't think it implies an 8-card club suit (though I've no idea what it does imply).
P_Marlowe
4C. The adv. is, that I can bid 5C over anything partner responds, in casehe doubts that 4C is natural. I am not 100% sure, that 5C is naturalanyway. With kind regardsMarlowe
MickyB
5♣ for me. Good work RHO, you've removed my forcing 4♣ bid :(
whereagles
If I'm sure pard will take this as nat, 5♣. Otherwise 3♣, followed up by more clubs if pard starts pulling my club bids :(
Finch
I'm struggling a bit to think what 5C could be other than to play in 5CI have a general rule that "if the auction is undefined, game is to play", but even if you don't have that rule, what else could 5C possibly be? As soon as you start telling me it's some sort of heart support I would suggest you invest in the redouble card.
mikeh
5♣:I really can't see any reasonable alternative. Partner is almost never going to raise 4♣ to 5 when it is correct to do so... he thinks we are running from 3♥, not running towards game. mike777
5 clubs, closer to bidding 6 clubs than 4 clubs.
joker_gib
he thinks we are running from 3♥, not running towards game. That's the key point ! 5♣ for me too
