Tournament context window

Recommended Posts

A great feature added recently to BBO is the ability to right-click on an upcoming tournament while kibitzing or playing and to register or use the partnership-desk feature.

Why not similarly permit a context menu for tournaments in progress to allow adding or removing yourself as a substitute? Two days ago a friend messaged me to register as sub because her partner went red. Had I been able to register more quickly, she and I would have played. As it was, the director "fixed" the problem, giving her a novice sub.

I think that is the real problem. A lot of directors like to remove players from the tournament at the first sign of disconnection or a "red dot", without considering the fact that most people want to play with a regular partner, friend, or another person of his or her choice. Players often need 2-4 minutes to return after a disconnection. When I direct tournaments, if an opponent calls to say a player is missing, I always allow about a minute for the missing player's partner to ask for time for the player to return.

True at times, but other times putting a sub in immediately is needed to keep the round moving, if the tournament is survivor and your partner is disconnected at the end of a round you and another (innocent) pair will be discarded. If there are other TD calls pending the TD is unlikely to have the time to wait so they will sub and move onto the next call. If there was improved td functionality we could put your call to the end of the cue and come back to it later, not so easy to do now.

I think there is also an onus on the player to tell the td immediately that they want to wait for their partner to return or that they want a specific sub. Players need to know that if they willingly delay a board any unfinished boards will be adjusted A= or A- and A+ for their opps.

As for getting a novice or worse, an expert sub  the td has little control over which sub gets assigned -unless the player is completely red (disconnected) or the names of both the player and sub are entered manually. Even then there may only be "private" subs available.

Having the ability to replace a stuck player with a GIB would be wonderful. The original player could then be returned to the tournament when they reconnected, perhaps this could even be automatic.
