West North East South

 -     -     -     Pass

 1    2    2    3

 3    Pass  Pass  Pass

In this auction East asked her partner if 3 was a reverse, West replied no then E passed. Obviously this was unauthorized information for East. How would you adjust?

result was 3-2

How many tricks did West make?

If 9 or fewer, then NS have been damaged and I would adjust to 4 down an additional trick. With poor minor suit controls and poor trumps, I see no reason for East to do anything else than raise.

On the other hand, I would never pass as East anyway so perhaps you need to find some peers of East first!

A player asked their partner what their bid meant?

4X-3, give the player a stern waring, and report it to Abuse. That's not just UI.

In my humble opinion, of course.

I made an adjustment to 4-3 and received a strong objection! We failed to come to an agreement so I said I would post the hand here for comments.

I doubt abuse would want to hear about this, the players were quite civil but convinced I was not correct in making the adjustment.

Shall we then have different rules for pick-up partnerships?

If this pair gets a good score after checking their agreements through table chat and the opponents have no problem, is this OK?

Of course not!

What about the pair at another table that loses the tournament by a matchpoint because of the extra help given to the pick-up partnership? They didn't even have a chance to object.

Depending on the N-S hands I would adjust to 4-3, possibly doubled if one of the defenders had a decent trump stack. E-W would be advised that such table talk is not allowed, whether the opponents object or not.

Pick-up partnerships have an advatange in that they have more situations where they can legitimately claim 'no agreement' when opponents ask. It's not fair to allow them to decide their agreements on the spot!

I dont think you can adjust at all, people often dont know what their pards bid (pick ups and some mildly reg partnerships)

what is wrong with a pick up ask their pard what a bid means that they make?

At a MBC table I'm always happy for the opposition to clarify their conventional agreements (3041 or 4130, capp or dont, etc) as I am looking for a friendly game and I do not want to beat people just because they are a pickup partnership and have not had time to agree a system.

Even so, I would not expect them to ask in a non-conventional situation like this as you are expected to play bridge.

In a tournament it is completely inappropriate and against the Laws to do any of this. If you cannot cope without asking, then do not play in tournaments with pickup partners.

I also agree with everything Bruce has said.
