Unrelated to browser, it just depends on the .LIN -> NetBridgeVu.exe association.

Reinstalling BBO takes care of it, can also be fixed by hand if you know how (in Mozilla/Firefox family, Tools -> Options -> Downloads).

I've got the correct association for the .LIN extension set up in Windows Explorer

As you suggested, I've done a complete reinstall of BBO (after removing via Control Panel) and that's made no difference.

So I'd like to try the other route. I'm using Firefox (v1.5.0.6) - but not as my default browser and when I get to Downloads the window tells me"Firefox can automatically download or open files of certain types". I then click on the button for "view and edit actions" and I've got a list of file extensions, with their file types and the appropriate action. But the .LIN extension isn't there and I can't find a way to add it.

Note that I only have the problem with Nikos's site - I can open the links to .lin files as bridge movies in the BBO Vugraph archive.

Help greatly appreciated <_<

Hi, Denis.

I would like to understand better what is your problem.

When you click on that link for instance :

http://www.sarantakos.com/bridge/vugraph/2006/etc/r1a.lin

a windows should pop up asking you if you want to OPEN or COPY TO A DISK.

If you click on OPEN you should be able to view the lin file in NetBridgeVu.exe

I understand that for you things don't happen as expected, but I don't understand what happen.

Hi Erkson

When I click on that link with IE6, a small Download window opens with the option buttons for Open, Save and Cancel. There is also a tick box (which I have ticked) which says "always ask before opening this type of file". If I use the Open option the link opens as a bridge movie - as expected because I have that association set up in Windows Explorer.

However with Firefox, when I click on the link, I don't get a download window with any options. the link immediately opens as a text file. I have found this happening on Nikos's site and also on Yvan Calame's site (http://www.bridgefederation.ch/2006/etc/index.php) yet when I click on links in the BBO archive (http://bridgebase04.bridgebase.com:81/vug/?C=M;O=D) they open immediately as bridge movies. It doesn't matter whether I left click to open immediately or right click to get a small menu with an Open option - the link still opens as a text file.

Very odd

Very odd, indeed, but not never-heard.

Good luck and best regards.

Very odd :)

I think the difference between the forum links and the myhands links is that forum links force a new window. My firefox behaves exactly like yours. Somebody should talk to the firefox people because this is not the way I think this should be handled, and this is probably true for documents other than .lin, too.

In the meantime, as a workaround, maybe everybody who creates new links to .lin files on own web pages should use links without the "open in new window" attribute, as this attribute make no sense for .lin files anyway.

I think BBO have reached new heights of excellence with these Championships. Rock steady Internet connections, 8- table coverage, excellent commentaries, a great results service on the Polish web site and superb coordination from Roland.

I do hope this is a sign of things to come from major championships, although I recognise what a huge amount of effort has gone into the planning and organisation by the host nation Poland. Well done BBO and the Poles!

Organisers of major championships all over the world should be forced to go to the vugraph theatre and see how it can and should be done. The "problem" we may face after Poland is that it can hardly be better, but it can easily be worse.

Then we will all be disappointed because we remember how the Poles did it. It's not easy for White Plains and Shanghai to come immediately after (even during) the European Championships.

All we can do is wish them good luck. I know for a fact that Jan Martel has put a lot of effort into making the USBC a huge success. However, my fear is that she has taken on too much herself. She will also be operating.

I sincerely hope that I am proven wrong.

As an example of how much our spectators appreciate the service the Polish organisers are offering, I would like to quote a short article in Wednesday's bulletin:

Congratulations

We receive many communication by email during the

Championships. Here is one we would like to share with you.

It was sent by Romania's Sergiu Ghizelea.

I congratulate The Polish Bridge Union for organising

the EBL Championships, for BBO-Vugraph transmissions

(really first class quality) but there is a 'Nec Plus

Ultra' that I want to underline:

The software by Jan Romanski for evaluating and presentation

of results is AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!

That is what I always want and I did not hope to find

it! I can myself analyse any board for every team, even for

every player!

It's as if I can watch the play of all the teams

at the same time! I'm really delighted to be able to do

that! Hearty congratulations to the author and thank you

very, very much to the people that have enabled the introduction

of this immense quantity of data!

It is just amazing and all involved are to be congratulated. As people have mentioned, this is now the standard by which others will be judged.

A few ideas on how the 'complete' experience may be possible. I think it was while watching a European Poker Tour event on TV that the commentary mentioned some of the technology that was coming into play. One thing that was mentioned was playing cards with chips in them to distinguish them from each other. The table then had sensors which could pick the cards up so players wouldn't have to show them to the tiny cameras that are now mounted on the tables. If such a thing were applied to bridge, then card play could be completely tracked and we wouldn't be left with incomplete play records and we might get a real-time feel for the players tempo. This might cut down the operator's workload or if a similar principle where able to be applied to the bidding mechanism, remove it altogether. It might also prove invaluable to directors and allow proper timing of teams speed of play when calculating slow play.

I am in no way decrying the performance of the operators who are fantastic and deserve all the credit they get for performing such an involved task with the level of precision they do, I am just floating ideas on where the next generation of vugraph may go.

It is also inevitable that cameras will be mounted on each table allowing TV/webcasting. No doubt this will be supplemented by live audio commentary from experts all over the globe. Exciting prospect isn't it!!

In the meantime, I would just like to re-iterate how fantastic this show is and I hope to be available to commentate on a fw more matches!!

Alan

P.S. I'm having to time my visits to the internet machine at work very carefully so my boss doesn't see me on www.polbridge.pl all time time desperately catching up with the latest news!! If I still have a job at the end of these two weeks it will be a miracle!!

The top 8 teams in the Seniors round robin qualified for the A Final, and the remaining for the B Final.

The top 6 teams in the A Final qualify for Shanghai. If, as seems likely, a seventh berth becomes available then the winners of the B Final will take the place.

The event was won by Germany, followed by Sweden, France, Denmark, Poland and Italy. Israel won the B Final.
