kenrexford
[hv=v=b&n=sa98xxhxxdacaqxxx&s=skxhkjxdkqjxxxxcx]133|200|Scoring: MP[/hv] 1♦-P-1♠-P-2♦-P-3♣-P-3♦-P-3♥-P-3NT-PPP Opening lead: club deuce. You hook the club, winning, cash the diamond Ace, and lead a heart to the Jack. Surprisingly, this holds. Bad news, because 6♦ makes. Still, you have to finish the hand. What is the best chance for taking all 13 tricks??? I think I found the line, but, alas, the cards were wrong. But, it is a cute hand nonetheless. Free
Lets see, if RHO has ♥A and some ♠s, and LHO has some ♣s and ♠s, we have a double squeeze. Just cash ♠K first, run off your ♦s, and keep ♠A9-♣Ax in dummy until the last ♦. Now you should know if you have to discard a ♣ or a ♠. Note: it's not because LHO doesn't take the ♥J that he doesn't have the Ace (or AQ). Seeing the discards, you should be able to know what to do. inquiry
Squeezes you might think about: 1) Spade-Club squeeze on West (never on East). This requires West to have lead the club two from a five card suit and to have either four plus spades or QJT tripleton spade 2) Spade-Heart squeeze on either opponent, too late to unblock the club winner and since the diamond ACE has been cashed the entry condition is spoiled. 3) Heart-Club Squeeze - no entry in either suit, so that is not going to work. 4) Guard Squeeze, with guard threat the spade hook. This one is fatally flawed. 5) Compound Squeeze. Someone who holds the heart Queen, spades 3-3, clubs 4-3. The flaw here, once again, is that the club ACE can not be cashed, before the diamonds. 6) Free's double squeeze fails (give West five clubs and both opponents three spades) fails for the same reason as many of the above squeezes fail. The failure to cash the club ACE. The correct play if you want to get into these squeeze endings is, would be to win the club queen. DON'T TOUCH THE DIAMOND ACE, then lead low to the heart JACK. You still have all 11 tricks you started with should this lose to the queen, and a 12th trick should the ACE win, and should it lose to the heart Queen, you ahve a squeeze chances for 12 tricks if they don't cash (but a spade back would talk you out of trying for the 12 tricks). Should it win, as here, then cross to the diamond ace, take the club ace (pitch a heart), win spade king. Now you have more squeeze possibilities, including a compound squeeze, etc. The critical ending will be... [hv=n=sa9hdcx&s=sxhkdxc]133|200|Now the simple squeeze works against either opponent with heart ace and 4S or heart ace and Spade QJT, The double squeeze Free mentioned obviously works (west 5+ clubs, East heart ACE), the club-spade simple squeeze on WEST still works (with no guess work). Sadly, the compound squeeze (the most likely) is broken. Assume East held 3C, 3S, and the heart ACE. He can not afford to give up his club guard. But as long as he holds onto a club while there is one in dummy, the compound squeeze will fail. However, many (poor) defenders will clutch to their spades and discard clubs (since partner has them stopped) so that pseudo compound squeeze will be succeful more often than it should be.
