Trumpace
I saw this in the book "Beaten by the masters" by Dvid Brd. Since I don't have the book handy, the hands might be different. You are South, playing in 5C, after West has preempted in hearts. [hv=n=sakth9732dakqc542&s=sj32h4dj542cakqj8]133|200|[/hv] West leads the AK of hearts, you ruff second trick with the ♣8. You play ♣AK of clubs and to your surprise East discards on the ♣K. Now what? (Scoring Rubber. Vul none.) Adv/Adv+ please hide your answers. pclayton
I think I've seen this a long time ago. Play a spade up. if West ruffs he beats air and I retain trump control. Club back to my hand and the last trump where I discard the K♠. 3 diamonds and come off the board with the spade 10. If East plays low I overtake and cash the J♦ for #11. If East wins, I get passage back to the closed hand.
Trumpace
I think I've seen this a long time ago. Play a spade up. if West ruffs he beats air and I retain trump control. Club back to my hand and the last trump where I discard the K♠. If you play a spade up, West can ruff and lead a heart to force you. If you want to catch a singleton Q with West, you don't have to play a spade up as you cash a spade honour anyway. But you got it, the key play is the discard of ♠A or K on the last trump, apparently blocking yourself in both spades and diamonds.
inquiry
Play West for at least 2D, since you didnt mention EAST not following suit, West aslo has 6 only hearts. Cash DAK, then pull trumps (throw diamond away DQ on 4th trump). Now if D are 3-3 (not likely) your 4th diamond is good. If not, EAST was squeezed and has to keep 3S (you have complete count), and his fourth diamond, throw him in with the diamond for a forced spade return. Winstonm
I think the simple solution is to assume West does not also hold the spade Q. Simply draw all trumps pitching either the Ace or King of spades on the fourth club, unblock the AKQ of diamonds and then play big spade followed by the 10. The only losing position would be for West to hold Qx, AKxxxxx, void, xxxx
