You and your new pard are ironing out your agreements. You somehow find your way to an excellent 6 contract.

Lead is 6[/hv]

How would you declare this against most if not all breaks?

I have 5 club tricks and the ace of hearts, so I probably need 6 trump tricks. That means two ruffs in one hand or the other, and therefore I cannot cope with any 4-1 trump breaks unless something good happens.

Unless there's some reason to be certain the HK is wrong, I think I finesse.

i) If the HQ holds I am now fairly secure. I continue heart ruff, AK of spades. If RHO blows take the spade finesse and cash 12 winners. If LHO blows play a club to dummy, another heart ruff and start cashing clubs. At some point RHO will ruff, but then he has to give us an entry to dummy via a heart, a trump or a diamond ruff. This loses only if clubs are 4-0. I could play the club to dummy before the second heart ruff, but I'm not sure that makes much difference.

ii) If the HQ loses, it depends what comes back:

iia) A diamond: ruff in dummy, club to hand, diamond ruff, queen of spades, heart ruff, AK of spades. This needs trumps 3-2.

iib) A heart: ruff in hand, AK of spades, club to dummy, heart ruff, diamond ruff, SQ.

iic) A trump: run it round to dummy, heart ruff, club to dummy, heart ruff (high), other top trump, diamond ruff, trump

So by finessing I'm making every time spades are 4-1 and the HK is right, but I'm losing to a few layouts when the HK is wrong e.g. singleton SJ (HA, H ruff, SA dropping the jack, club to dummy, H ruff high, trumps).

I'm pleased to see that my HQ won at trick 1.

What did RHO discard on your second heart (and indeed on my second heart, but I'm a trick better off)?
