You deal and open 1, overcalled 1, partner doubles, passed to you...[/hv]

I dont like the look of clubs (for any number of NT), and I dont think i have enough to penalty pass the negdbl.... sitting under the bidder.

So I will do the next best thing, and bid 2S

I think this must be natural and/or ask pard to bid again. If he bids 3C i bid 3N happily (I assume he cannot bid 2N or the guy cannot have his bid). If he bids 3H I hum and haw for a bit and ..... I dunno.

If he puts me back to 3D, we play there. If he bids 4D i raise to 5.

I gave some serious thought to passing the negative double, but this isn't a call I like to do at low levels, and so decided to go with 2NT. I'm not entirely happy with it, but I think the alternatives are worse.

Besides which, they'll probably lead a spade even if clubs are wide open.

Pass doesn't look right, and so, not really wanting to make the underbids of 2 or 2, I'll bid 2NT -- in competitive auctions, notrump rebids can be somewhat offshape. 3 has some merit, but I don't think one should jump raise with three -- I'm closer to 2 than 3.

For those who bid 2, this is (generally played as) game forcing.

Andy

PS. I fail to understand jillybean's "clear but boring" 2 -- perhaps it's a typo?

My word, what do people need to pass the double! I expect to get 800 or more at least 60% of the time. I'll apply one of the first lessons I learned at the rubber bridge tables many years ago: When in doubt, carry them out.

Stephen, I thought exactly the same sort of thing, and bid 2.

...my partner bid 2NT.

What now?

Wow - only 17 choices?

I haven't had a lot of luck carrying them out at the 1 level with 4 trump.

2N; not perfect, but I do have a nice source of tricks.

yeah I forgot 4, 'other other', and UnDouble.

Hmm it would never really occur to me that:

(1) Bidding 2 here shows spades.

(2) Bidding 2 doesn't promise a rebid.

But I guess this is why I don't play a lot of individuals. What would you bid over the double with:

xx

Axx

AQJx

AKxx

This seems like a normal 2 bid to me.

Anyways I think it's a choice between 2NT and pass. I'd tend to bid 2NT unless in need of a swing.

I would do the same.

I have a slight preference for 2NT vs passing and think it is a close decision.

2NT leaves room for PD who may have had 5H and been too light for a direct 2H to bid 3H on the way to 3NT just to check if I have support. 2NT may also lead to us getting hurt in clubs at 3NT or even 2NT if PD passes.

We also may get to diamonds after 2NT.

Passing will almost certainly get 200 and may often get 500, and once in a while 800 or on a perfect day 1100. Off course, most hands resulting in 500+ may also have game in it for your side.

A very close decision and if the opps are known to overcall on 5 spades and garbage, I might find myself passing and hoping for 800.

Heheh they think we're idiots but at least you and I think in parallel on this........

I guess if partner couldn't bid 2N the first time, and he still didn't bid anything else, I am going to take his 2N as exploratory.

3 for me... now he knows where I live. Natural at least. I'm not going to show him support for hearts if he cannot bid them. 4-3 fit with an indy partner... no thanks!

Also I am in CMA mode - if he really is the sort of player that bids 2N on no fit, heaven help us - but it may be better to make one more bid.

Are psyches explicitly disallowed? Maybe we have a spade fit after all? Then the 2 bid comes home now because he continues over 3 with 3. Off we go to the races perhaps....... even 4-4 spade fit with 5 spades on my left may have play for 4.

To answer Adam's point about 2 when I have xx in spades and a good hand, in this sort of a contest it makes sense to bid naturally, and I would bid 3C over the double (jump to 3C, right?)

but what do I know, Adam?

In Imps its a clear cut pass. I think 1s will rarely make.

In fact bidding 2nt is just as big of a risk then passing because you will get a club lead more often then you think.

If they make 1s X its no disaster since the possible +500 easily make up for it ( expecting +800 seems unreasonnable)
