Hi !

I watched an experts game recently. When they cuebid, sometimes it is with the king and sometimes it is with the ace. Somebody can explain me how does it works.

I read that you must cuebid aces or voids first and kings or singletons at the second round. But it is not what i saw.

For exemple, with the K and the A an expert first cue bid 4

Thank you.

What you have learned used is "North American" style (first round controls first) cuebidding but I think most pairs use Italian style cuebidding now (mixed first and second round controls).

It's totally a stylistic choice. Playing mixed cues, you are supposed to bid your controls up the line (perhaps with some restrictions about not cue-bidding shortness in partner's suits), so if you skip a suit, you deny a control in that suit. This has the advantage of being able to quickly determine that there are 2 losers in a suit, sometimes letting you stop at the 4 level where the other style may get you to the 5 level. Disadvantage of still sometimes needing to use some sort of blackwood type bid to avoid slam off 2 aces/keycards, and uncertainty of whether opposite your singleton, partner is cue bidding an ace (prob good/OK), or a K (prob bad), if you haven't been able to show the shortness earlier in the auction.
