So it can only be take-out. If RHO had advanced to 3♥ instead of 2♥, opener could probably hold a hand that could double for penalty. The NT opener can easily hold AK AJ109x xxx Axx and fully expect to make 6+ tricks. In fact, since partner has already said he has less than 7 hcp, and you will likely be forcing him to the 3 level with a takeout X, there is a lot of merit in considering this X to at least be penalty oriented. You may argue that you would open this hand 1♥, but not everybody plays this way. :blink: However, I also realize this is not the "in" thing these days, so in terms of the question asked, without discussion, both X's are usually considered to be takeout. After your strong NT, I thought it was "standard" that the double is penalty in this seat, while if the bidder is sitting over you it is takeout.
