What happened to the Sheepman thread

The Sheepman thread has mysteriously disappeared. I personally don't see why, it really is just harmless fun. And if you check the profiles of about 80% of the England juniors, they all have references to Sheepman in them.

Whilst I can see that there's a point that it's meaningless to a lot of posters, it attracted several new members to the forums this morning, and if they're reading this thread, there's no reason why they shouldn't be reading and posting in other threads as well.

And check out my new signature - a tribute to the Sheepy one.

Sheepman is an English junior (U20) who goes by the name of Rob Myers. He confounds his partners, teachers and opponents alike by getting good results despite the rules in every bridge textbook ever written, such as finishing second in the EBU riviera congress, beating a large number of experts in the process.

As a result, his bridge has attracted a cult following, known as the cult of Sheepman. However, loyalists such as me who prefer to stick to the textbook are not so in favour. Hence the thread, set up by another England U20, Ben Paske (Pasker).

Incidentally, team Sheepman did quite well in a recent BBO league.

I have removed the sheepman post due to the latest group of comments added to it after it was restored (for what it is worth, I was not responsible for the first removal of the thread).

A couple of facts,

1) There is a player named sheepman who plays on BBO

2) Some of the comments boarded on libel, and in the newest post to that thread clearly violated a number of our most stringent rules on posting on this site.

3) You guys maybe having fun at someone else;s expense, and maybe he enjoys the discussion, but no one enjoy the last post to that thread.

In my opinion, futher attempt to have such a thread open is a waste of time as there is no way to control the kind of thing that showed up in the newest post. I will let the other moderators decide how to continue. I was for restoring the thread, but I now have joined the first moderator who thought it was too much. At the very least, if it comes back a few of the newest post will be either heavily edited or deleted all together.

I had a subscription to “Sheepman” for a few years back in the mid 80s. This was well after the glory years when Frank Miller was writing the comic. However, I always felt that Grant Morrison did a decent enough job. What attracted me to “Sheepman” was that it didn't feel like a typical super hero comic. Admittedly, this was none to surprising given that the protagonist really didn't have any super powers. (It was never completely clear whether Sheepman was actually capable of growing a pelt or simply dressed up an elaborate costume). There's no doubt that Sheepman was brave. Anyone who'd dress up in that kind of a costume up in the Highlands certainly needs to be able to take care of themselves - Well, that, or they had some very odd itches that needed to be scratched...

I pretty much lost interest in Sheepman after the whole Crisis on Infinite Earths fiasco. The attempt to retcon Sheepman into an eco-terrorist really didn't do much for me. When they introduced whole “Mistress of Ewe” idiocy the comic degenerated into second rate manga. The Japanese do a much better job with the whole animated porn thing...
