Hand from the World Junior Camp

Recommended Posts

You sit down with an attractive looking French girl, and about 3 rounds in, you meet a pair who think that they are funny.

Anyway, LHO starts off with a pass, alerted as 0-6 or 16+. You call the director over about the HUM, and he says, "it's only a bit of fun. They'll get more bad boards in the course of the event, so just see what you can do"

Partner decides to overcall 1H, and RHO pops up with 1NT as "offshape and wide-ranging".

What do you do? In case you want a hand, here it is:

Ahh... the famous Kåre Pass! :)

First introduced in the camp by Kåre Gjaldbæk from Denmark.

Then why do you care about the bid? :)

Anyway, I'll just bid 4 and hope for the best.

I dont do anything, cause we would have left for lunch/dinner long before now!!

Usually you go to dinner after the tournament... The other problem might be that these camps are usually held in the middle of nowhere which means a romantic walk in the forest but no dinner...

Please explain exactly how is this a problem?! :)

Other than maybe you go hungry for the night having missed the camp's dinner? (And if it is similar to the camp food I used to get, you're usually not missing much anyway).

Ah, but when you're full of love (well, ok, temporary infatuation), whats a little discomfort of the stomach? Breakfast is only a few hours away.......and usually even the camp kitchen cant mess up cereal and milk!!

:P

Double. They won't have a clue about what's going on, so if I go slowlyish and show defence they're more likely to pass 4 than the auto-4 an immediate 4 bid is likely to provoke.

Second choice 2 for vaguely similar reasons.

if ben can use a fit jump, i can use an under j/s to show gf with a stiff/void :)

i'd probably bid 4

Fit jumps are standard in competition, aren't they? I assume that you don't play your ujs and ojs in competition.

I absolutely agree with Gerben that we should consider the 1H bid an opening, not an overcall. I'd also bid 4C.

No,

Fit jumps are not standard although likely gaining in popularity. Many people still play weak jump-shifts in competition (so 3S would be a splinter in support of hearts).

If playing fit jumps, then some number of clubs might be a reasonable bid. 3 as a splinter would probably help partner better judge the combined ODR on this occasion.
