Asks for a heart stopper. If you had one yourself, you would bid 3NT. That's also a reply to your 4th question. 2. Yes, because it gives him two extra steps: pass and redouble. Some play that 3NT after a double shows a double stopper. 3. I would have passed 3♦. It's invitational as I play it; don't know about sayc though. A game forcing hand with no clear direction must go through 4th suit first. Roland
P_Marlowe
1) 3H is 4th suit, i.e. it ask for further description, e.g. stopper in heart2) no, he has a double stopper in heart, ... the X of 3H is not really to recommend Does West really want a heart lead?3) Standard meaning for 3D is, that it is invitational, i.e. 3D is an underbid North should bid 2H, holding 16 HCP (you can downgrade if you like) and a fit, slam is an option, in case the opener is better than min. As it happens, single dummy, 6C / 6D have a fair chance to succeed, although the small is less than 50%, if opener is stronger, the percentage will be higher. But even if it were non-forcing I'd try for 3NT (via 3♥ or some other gadget) because the hand has a great diamond holding and quick tricks on the side. Mandatory at imps, I'd say

Well, I seem to recall having read that in the ACBL sayc pamphlet. Memory can be failing me, though. It was long ago and I skimmed through it at lightning speed B)
