jocdelevat
Dealer: North Vul: EW Scoring: IMP ♠ JT73 ♥ Q53 ♦ 97 ♣ 5432 West North East South - 1♦ 1♠ Pass 1NT Dbl RDbl 2♥ Pass 3♦ Pass Pass Dbl Pass Pass Pass Hi all Playing basic SAYC level beginner intermediate. I usually don't accept invites from a level higher than mine but sometimes I like to test my skils on biding. I can be lucki with patient partner and willing to give me advice then the game will be more enjoyeable and chalenging.I had this hand my partner was expert. I bid 2h because didn't sound right for me to let opps play in 1nt redouble. We won 0.8 imps with a 3d contract down 2 but my partner told me that I should bid 2d not 2h so he can pass. He was upset but I didn't understand the auction. Questions:1. do you pass 1nt redouble( was my p double penalty or take out)2.do you read my partner hand as 5 or more in diamond suit3. do you bid 2d like he said Thank you in advance for your adviceBest regardsJocdelevat

Stephen Tu
Doubles of NT bids should be assumed to be penalty without special agreements, with the exception of sequences 1x-p-1nt-(dbl) where it's still takeout of the suit opened. Opener is showing a very strong hand here, likely to have diamond length but not guaranteed, could be a huge balanced hand with only 4 diamonds. No, you shouldn't rescue, and certainly not to 2h for a multitude of reasons. 2h can't possibly be right with only 3 of them, partner is extremely unlikely to have 5 of them to make a reasonable trump suit having opened 1d. It is much more likely that he has 4 clubs giving you a 4-4 club fit, or 5 or 6 diamonds. 2h prevents you from getting out in 2c/2d. Partner got himself into the redoubled mess, let him dig himself out if he reconsiders. You don't know whether 2c/2d/just gutting it out in 1ntxx is better, so let him decide. If he bids 2c/2d you have an easy pass. Bidding 2d would prevent you from getting to 2c if it's better.
helene_t
Agree with the other posters. But you should not pay attention to the levels other players put on there profiles. Many "Experts" have poor knowledge of bidding theory, and even if they are good bidders there's no reason to expect them to be good teachers. Also, keep in mind that a good player from X-culture may have no clue about the standard bidding system of Y-culture and is therefore incompetent of giving bidding advice when the latter is agreed. Many don't even realize that their own culture is not universal. For example, I've seen an "expert" who refused to alert1NT-3♣*as a transfer to diamonds, because "everybody knows" that 3♣ shows diamonds. If a player has a yellow star, or if he was recomended by other players as a good teacher, there's a good chance you can trust his advice. You do gthe right thing by posting questions on this forum. There're a lot of good players here, and even if one of us say nonsense, he/she will be corrected by peers.
