The best concert you have ever visited

My choice:

In summer 1994 I visited Pink Floyd outdoor concert in Cologne/Germany.

They stopped there during their The Division Bell World Tour.

This concert was by far the best sounding outdoor concert I have ever heard.

(nearly the studio quality) Pink Floyd used all of the modern media - lights, video, lasers, effects, and props.

These guys are still one of the greatest bands of all time, the absence of founding member Roger Waters was not going to influence the greatness of this show

Pink Floyd released an album of live music from The Division Bell Tour entitled P*U*L*S*E. This album represents the joining of two great albums The Division Bell, and Dark Side of the Moon(1973), which was played entirely during The Division Bell Tour...this was for me the greatest experience in that concert.

It's a toss-up... all of these at the Musikhalle Hamburg with the NDR Philharmoniker:

- G. Wand conducting Bruckner's 8th.

- C. Eschenbach conducting Mahler's 6th.

- V. Gergiev conducting Schostakowitsch's 7th.

1. Sleater-Kinney, Burlington VT. 07/2005

2. The Clash, Poughkeepsie NY, 1982

3. Aimee Mann / David Cross, Boston MA 2000

4. Soft White Underbelly, Poughkeepsie, NY 1983

5. REM, Athens GA 1985

Ooh, who opened for REM? They had many different great opening acts over the years...

Did anyone see the Metallica/GNR tour in the early 90's?

I am still waiting to see Aimee Mann at Largo's. I missed her there a few months ago but she plays there frequently.... (I am actually trying to get Bic Runga tickets at Largo for August for her only stop in the US, but Largo is closed for the next 2 weeks...)

I am psyched for Belle and Sebastian with the LA Philomonic next week. And the Shins are opening! Now if only I had managed to get tickets to the Radiohead show for tonight also...

Last weekend, Rattle conducting the Berlin philharmonics and a brilliant set of soloists for Rhengold. It was performed as a concert, so the singers were not distracted by a funny acting etc. Maybe more importantly, they respected Rattle, so this was this was more of a team performance than every opera I have seen before; everything fit well together, pefect chamber music-like duets between vocal and orchestra soloists etc. Just brilliant.

Before that, probably Murray Perahia.

Warren Zevon at the Beacon

Second was Steve Miller at the Beacon

Disclaimer, I haven[t been to that many shows. I almost saw Junior Wells on his last tour. Went with two friends, they'd just started dating and were an hour late and we couldn't get in. I wonder if they're still together.

1985 in Athens GA (where REM is from)....I doubt they actually had an opening act. Or...they were the opening act for someone else.

I saw the 1986 Pink Floyd tour also (ok, it was actually 1987 by the time it came to the Orange Bowl in Miami). Pouring down rain, and our seats were on the opposite end of the field from the stage, Top deck, top row. As far as you could get from the stage and still be in the stadium. Thankfully, lots of people hadnt shown up due to the rain and we managed to scarf some seats under the deck.

Bad Company/Kansas in the late 70's. Kansas was the opening act.

The Boss. Twice.

Journey.

AC/DC

Billy Joel

Elton John

Oddly enough, one of the best concerts I ever saw was when a couple of friends of mine decided we were going to take road trip from Atlanta to Athens GA to see some band that I had never heard of. It turned out to be The Psychadelic Furs.

Some others I cant remember for various reasons. :P

Very easy question: Gotan Project playing the last gig (Sunday night) during a French festival (Eurockeenes de Belfort). On the main stage it was Rammstein, and we all couldn't care less. Our group of people was quite diverse in musical taste, and most of us hadn't even heard of them before, but their gig left us in complete awe.

During the first half of their show, they're performing behind a large screen of semi-transparent material which hangs down at the front of the stage, completely disguising the band. Full-screen video material is projected on the screen, but you can see the silouettes of the band from time to time. Before the second half, the veil drops and you have your usual stage performance.

They also had an Argentinian tango pair dancing to a few of their songs.

Perfect gig for me, and we saw quite a lot of awesome performances during the three days on the festival. I will never forget it.

They have published a DVD with their concert lately, which I can recommend to everyone interested in Argentinian Tango or good music in general.

In no particular order:

Eschenbach conducting Bruckner 8 last year.

The first time I heard Nielsen 4, which was live at the proms - I can't remember the conductor or the orchestra, but it blew me away. Incredible.

The first live classical concert I ever went to - I was about 13, and it was Dorati conducting Beethoven 9. Started my addiction to classical music.

Haitink conducting Don Giovanni at Glyndebourne - must have been about 1985 or 1986 or so. I was lucky enough to see it 3 times that year.

But there's been a few other highlights - lowlights - including the two times I've been reduced to tears that I remember (brilliant performances of Britten's War Requiem and the end of Eugene Onegin)

I have high hopes for Rattle conducting the Berlin Phil in Bruckner 7 later this year (certainly costing me enough!)

I went and saw Steve Miller Band at the Fender center in Corona, CA on Saturday night. The Fender center is a guitar museum, but it also a music school for (mostly) under-priviledged kids. Miller believes in the cause and gives a fund raising concert for the center whenever he is in town.

At the beginning of the show, a custom Stratocaster was auctioned off that had Miller's winged horse painted on the guitar. The bidding started at $25,000. When it petered off at about $80K, a secret bidder placed a bid of $100K and the guitar was sold.

The secret bidder was Miller himself! He wanted the guitar kept in the museum. He later then decided he wanted the guitar sold to the next highest bidder at $80,000. The mortgage for the Fender center was paid off in the process.

This ties the record price set for an autographed auctioned guitar with the Rolling Stones.

And yeah the show was awesome. He played for a full 2 1/2 hours. A few of the students played with him for one set, that included a lot of old blues standards.

The harmonica player, Norton Buffalo, is worth the price of admission alone. One of the best in the world.

Flew down to Philly on Monday night and caught Sleater-Kinney on their "last" tour (band is going on indefinite hiatus)

The ladies rocked the house...

They're playing Portland on the 11th/12th

I'm debating a cross country trip.

I've only been to two concerts in my life: Janis Joplin in Oklahoma City, who the police arrested on stage about 15 minutes in.

The second was Herb Albert and the Tijuanna Brass in San Francisco who were not arrested by the police and had George Carlin in suit and tie as their opening act.

Joplin was better.
