inquiry
This was a triple squeeze for one extra winner. You had 12 tricks.....and west needed to keep a spade, three hearts and three clubs in a five card ending, so the squeeze took effect with two free winners left. The last free suit winner really crushed West...
Finch
As usual I cannot read how the play went, but the short answer to "is this a squeeze?" is "yes and no". The "no" part is because, with the queen of clubs onside, you always had 13 rightful tricks so there was nothing to gain by a squeeze. The "yes" part is because you can give west the Jack of clubs as well - so you only have 12 rightful tricks - and then squeeze him out it. Think about the hand with the clubs changed so that North has AK8, South 107 and West QJ9x. On any lead - let's say a diamond - south can cash five diamond tricks discarding two clubs from hand. West has to find 4 discards: a club and a heart are easy, but West cannot throw anything on the fourth round of diamonds - never mind the fifth - without giving the 13th trick. As inquiry says, this is a triple squeeze that gains one trick. So poor West just has too many high cards! Funnily enough, if we give west the king of clubs in addition you can still make 13 tricks with a play that is very rare and exceptionally satisfying: a repeating triple squeeze. After all, if West was squeezed on only the fourth diamond, we should be able to squeeze him on the fifth as well! So let's swap the King and 9 of clubs, and have West lead the CK against 7NT. Now there are only 11 top tricks and no obvious sources of one, never mind two, more. We need to be careful to get this right, so we cash the king of hearts then four rounds of diamonds discarding a heart on the fourth diamond. This brings us to this position: [hv=n=sq9ha10d5cjx&w=sj10xxhq8dck&e=sxxxhjdcxxx&s=sakxxh97dc10]399|300|[/hv] On the fifth diamond we discard another heart from hand, and West has to give up one trick - the twelfth - in whichever suit he discards. But it's worse than that: let's see what happens next.- If West discards the king of clubs, we next cash the jack of clubs, and West has to give up the 13th trick in one of the majors.- If West discards another heart, we next cash the A and 10 of hearts discarding a club from hand, and West has to give up the 13th trick in one of the black suits.- If West discards a spade, we can cash four spades, and on the fourth spade west - who has to discard before dummy - has to give up the 13th trick in one of hearts or clubs. Walddk
Or you can give West nothing in clubs. Then it's an automatic squeeze in the majors against West. ♠ J1043♥ Q832♦ 3♣ 9532 He can discard all his clubs on the diamonds, and one heart on ♣A. Then ♣K will squeeze him in the majors.
