What is this bidding

If my partner bid 4D I would assume he had lots of clubs and lots of diamonds, but more clubs than diamonds.

Double penalties.

4H very good hand, likely to want to play in spades.

With my regular partners I am certain about the first two of these, I'm not certain we'd be 100% in alignment about what hands would bid 4H.

4H is easy, it certainly shows spade

support and most likely shortage

in hearts => 3-1-3-5.

4D is a bid more problematic, it

depends a bid on the meaning of

3S, ... since we assume 2/1, 3S

is forcing, hence 4D is probably

natural and denies a fit - most

likely 6-5.

With kind regards

Marlowe

4 clearly shows spade support since 4 and 4 are natural and forcing. I'd say that 4 is the weakest raise, 3 shows some slam extras, may be quite strong and 4 as slam interest with a heart control. It may be a good idea to play that 4 shows heart shortness, as you have 3 available.

Thanks for replies, I was just not sure.

The vugraph was:

North: x A KQJxx AJxxxx

1 - pass - 2 - 2

2 - 3 - 4 - pass

4 - pass - 4NT - pass

5

0 or 3, It is obvious that partner took 4 as cuebid for spades. What will be your bid?

Helgemo bid 7, it is the best contract as South has:

AKxxxx x Axx Kxx

(spades are 3-3, clubs 2-2...)

Why is it obvious that partner took 4 as a cuebid for spades? This wouldn't occur to me either before or after looking at either or both of the hands.

It's not obvious at all partner took 4D as a cue for spades. He has a huge hand (virtually a slam force) opposite a minor 2-suiter and was showing his heart control en route (he may have thought) to 6C.

The hands were actually...

Helness: 6 A KQJ74 AKJ986

Helgemo: AKT975 T AT2 743

You're right (I switched the K). Thanks for writting them.

If 5 is 0 or 3 and only 2 aces are missing then it has to be response with some king (when you have the club one, it is MUCH easier to know with which king).
