mike777
Assuming you are not playing ELC but standard methods I often see people double and then raise on an ordinary hand. They argue everyone is bidding so I cannot have extras I am just competing up to the LOTT level. Is this standard expert practice? (1c)-x=(1h)=1s(2c)=2s? or 1c=x=p=1h2c=2h? joshs
In the first auction, partner has made a free bid so really raising doesn't promise anything more than having 4 trumps. If you wanted to invite game you can bid 3M (partner's range is pretty tight). In the auction:1C-x-P-1H2C I think the 2 most common styles on these auctions are: a. 4 trumps, No extras (this only applies to competing to the 2 level).b. 4 trumps, moderate extras, but doesn't promise anything close to what the raise would had RHO passed. This auction is trickier because the range on the 1H bid is much wider. So with real game interest you just have to stretch a little and bid 3H... bid_em_up
In a random partnership or against weaker opponents, it "tends" to be good practice to bid one more. If nothing more, it takes up bidding room that opps could use otherwise. In my established partnerships, bidding the same values twice is a crime punishable by no less than holding yarboroughs for the next ten hands.
pclayton
BWS defines the raise in comp as a King more than extra. Note theres a big difference between your examples; after a 'free' 1♠ call, a LOTT raise makes more sense.
keylime
I tend to treat a bid by pard as if they have overcalled, thusly the overcall structure is "on": skip bid of opener's suit - mixed raise2NT - offensive hand, supportcuebid - raise for pard, showing a more defensive hand in scope.
