1C-(1H)-?

I thought no special treatment: dbl=4s, 1=5+s, 1NT=stops+no s.

I remember i have seen some posts here before, some play it differently. For example, with my hand, you may want to let overcaller to be leader with Qxx in his suit.

Can you tell me your favorite treatment here? Thanks in advance.

Some play, 1-(1)-?

  •
  • 1 = 4+, 1 RF

  • 1NT = balanced natural, non-forcing

  • DBL = shows unbid minor, negative

I even play this.

If you're going to play this style, you should probably swap 1 and DBL:

  • DBL = 4+, 1 RF
  • 1 = shows unbid minor, negative
  • 1NT = balanced natural, non-forcing

This gives you the extra room where it's useful (1 by opener over DBL now can be 3 card supp, or possibly instead various hands that have no good bid, e.g. bal hands with no stopper).

Andy

(Personally, I like DBL = 4 and 1 = 5+ because I don't think the "unbid minor, negative" hand type comes up often enough, and I like the definition in competitive auctions.)

1C/D (1H):

X - denies 4 spades, shows minor oriented hand

1S - 4+ (if you like, support doubles can be used - it's your preference)

This method seems to always force responder to make the decision with a known 9 card spade fit, opener will never know about the 9 card fit. If one spade promised 5 always then both partners can participate in the decision when a 9 card fit is known?

Italian style:

dbl = 4

1 = balanced (transfer to 1NT)

1NT = support, weak or GF

2 = diamonds

I believe the style of many great Italians, which I have never played but can't think of a reason not to, is

DBL = 4 or 5 spades.

1 = balanced (transfer to 1NT)

1NT+ = transfers (2 = 6+ spades, could be negative freebid strength or stronger)

This seems very good to me, and I did vugraph commentary when I believe Versace and Sementa had this come up.

JD:

From the times it's come up, we haven't had a problem locating if the spade bidder is on 4 or 5 cards - we have the tools to find out.

If anything, it clears up some of the murkiness of the negative double. Haven't had hardly any issues and been using it a year.
