A few from last night

Recommended Posts

A few run of the mill problems for you from last nights pair game:

1. You play in 4 after your RHO overcalls 1:

[hv=d=n&v=b&n=stxxha62dtcakt8xx&s=sa9xhkq8753dqxxcq]133|200|Scoring: MP[/hv]

Opening lead is the K. Plan the play.

2. You open 1 (would you? Or is this a 15-17 NT?) in 3rd chair at all vul: Kx AKJxx QJx xxx. Pard bids 2 (fit jump). Your call?

3. xx xxxx K9xxx AJ at vul vs not. 1 on left, 1 by pard, 1N on right. Pass, Pass, 2 by pard and 3 on your right. Your call?

1. You play in 4♥ after your RHO overcalls 1♠:

Dealer: North

Vul: Both

Scoring: MP

♠ Txx

♥ A62

D T

♣ AKT8xx

♠ A9x

♥ KQ8753

D Qxx

♣ Q

I know it's matchpoints, but:

Take the ace, then QC, then draw trumps ending in dummy, throw spade losers on clubs, if clubs are 3-3 you are in luck, if not lead the D10.

Opening lead is the K♠. Plan the play.

2. You open 1♥ (would you? Or is this a 15-17 NT?) in 3rd chair at all vul: ♠Kx ♥AKJxx DQJx ♣xxx. Pard bids 2♠ (fit jump). Your call?

I could open 1NT depending on pard. Assuming 2S is invitational, 4H is fine.

3. ♠xx ♥xxxx DK9xxx ♣AJ at vul vs not. 1♣ on left, 1♠ by pard, 1N on right. Pass, Pass, 2♠ by pard and 3♣ on your right. Your call?

Pass, wtp? Pard is an overcaller, after all.

1. I win the Ace of spades. K to make sure trumps aren't 4-0 (if so, brain is stretching on how to make it now - don't think it does). Unblock the Q then play another high trump - if trumps are 2-2 you're in business; if not, end in dummy with trump and start dropping diamonds -> RHO may have J-x of spades.

2. I open 1. After 2 fit jump I can rebid 2NT to show this hand.

3. I agree with Josh - 3 looks clear to me. Hand has upgraded to be more offensive.

"My vul, my unfav vul partner has bid twice. You have an ace and a K. Is this really a clear cut pass/wtp?"

It is, playing in my partnerships. We tend to overcall light, stick better hands (15/16+ with a good 6 card suit) in double, and compete heavily at the 2 level with anything approaching a decent 6 card suit, even at unfavorable.

I would think that a fellow wild man such as yourself would understand :P

1. This is MP, so I play for the max. Win spade, cash Qc, cash two top trumps ending on board. If trumps are 2-2, I make 7 if clubs are 3-3 if J doub, 6 if they are 4-2, 5 if they split 5-1.

If trumps are 3-1, I bang away at clubs. If clubs are 3-3 or J doub, I'll still make 5. If 3rd club is ruffed, I still make 4. If 3rd club is not ruffed, I can still try for 5 by catching RHO with AK d and LHO with 2nd spade.

If trumps are 4-0, life is still good if clubs break.

2. If 3d does not promise more than diamonds and a full opener, then I try that. If pard bids 3n, I'll play there. If pard retreats to 3h, I'll pass, fearing 4 quick losers in the minors.

If 3d suggests a big hand, then i'll just bail at 4h.

3. Partner may have 5s and a good hand, or partner may have 6s (but too good to WJO). If the former, I dont like our chances in 3s and 3c is apt to be off a trick or two. If the latter, then 3s may be our best spot. I'll double, and hope partner can work out the best action. My second choice is to pass.

1. K, C , h , running Clubs

2. 2 NT shows a little extra but not enough for a direct 4 Heart bid?

Clear 1 opener btw.

3. 3, but no way wtp...pass or X may be right too.
