You hold the following:

AJT43

A

AK9876

8

The bidding is as follows

3 passes to you

you open 1 diamond, lho passes, partner responds 1 heart, rho passes

you rebid 1 spade, lho bids 2 clubs, partner bids 2 hearts, rho passes,

you bid 2 spades, lho passes, partner bids 3 spades, rho passes.

What is your next bid?

(Not that I feel it matters much, but the scoring format is imp pairs.)

Additional Info: you are playing 2/1 GF except for suit rebid, and jump-shift responses to 1m would be a fit raise by a passed hand, not a WJS.

Why didn't I rebid 2 over 1?

4clubs

Tough hand, we have shown a 6-5 hand and partner can only invite with 3S. Partner has made a free rebid of 2h so I am concerned we have wasted heart values. I think with KQx of spades and nothing partner would have jumped to 4S so.....

If partner rebids 4H I will sign off in 4S and may miss slam.

edit: yes 2s would have been a better start than 1S.

Because the partnership has the agreement that the 1 spade rebid is forcing one round, because this way I give partner more time and room to show whatever support she might have for either of my two suits which will sound like a 5-6 hand while the bidding is still below the 3NT level, and because my power isn't totally concentrated in my two suits. Why do I want to rush without some indication of where this hand is going?

I'm not sure this hand is worth more than one try, but the trouble is I can't get a useful information from partner. What I need are good trumps honours and either a shortage in diamonds or the Q of diamonds.

Lets give partner some probable hands:

KQx

Kxxxxx

Qx

xx

No, he can't have this hand, he'd have bid something more than 2

All things considered, for slam to be good, partner has to have the perfect hand to make slam, and I can't see it happening. Therefore I bid 4 and be done with it.

hand is worth one slam try on way to 4. If 3NT is serious, ok bid that. If not, cue-bid 4. Of course, it is too late for misiry after you open 1 (misiry would start 3) so the restriction is not necessary.

Speaking of Misiry, I kibitzed this hand among world class players recently.... maybe some of you saw it too, there was several 100 kibitzers at the tables. The full hand was:

[hv=d=s&v=n&n=st54ht762d7ct7632&w=s9hak953d85cqj954&e=sq872hqj4d9632cak&s=sakj63h8dakqjt4c8]399|300|Scoring: Chicago

World Class NS,

1   (1)  Pass  (1)

4NT  (pass)  5   (DBL)

5--passed around and doubled.

[/hv]

Only 4 out of 16 pairs reached 4 (yes, 4 will make). I suspect if south starts 3 as preempt or strong two suiter with diamonds and without , NS will find 4 even if west bids hearts along the way. Likely auctions.. 3D-(3H)-P-(4H)-4S, and 3D-(P)-3/4H-(P); 4S- all pass. Misiry isn't fail-proof, and it might not have helped on the current problem hand, but it is fun. This is the second example I found where if you don't open Misiry, they bid your best fitting suit before you get a chance.
